View Full Version : Pro Version 1.20.x Beta Test
jdobbs
22nd November 2006, 00:45
I have released as a beta a version of DVD-RB (v1.20.3) that includes the ability to output to alternate formats such as AVI and MP4. Generally it is meant for encoding for MOBILE devices such as the iPod -- but it can also be used to create any number of other formats. The engine used for encoding to the MOBILE format(s) is FFMPEG, so the selectable types for output is fairly large.
The new MOBILE output in this version SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BETA. As such, it is not being mailed to VIP users until tested to some degree. Instead I'm posting it here in the hope that this thread might become a place for feedback. Labeling this as a BETA version of the software means there are very likely some bugs, so if you're not interested in testing -- you should probably not use this capability as yet. As soon as I get some feedback on the new capability I will update it and send it out to all VIP users.
Also please note that the Professional Edition (including this BETA) only works for those who have a valid registration. So keep that in mind before attempting to download it.
If you are a VIP and would like to test this version, here are some notes that might help you get started:
The file MOBILE.INI is included in the DVD-RB TEMPLATES directory. It is used to load and save encoding parameters as PRESETS for MOBILE encoding.
When you select "Mobile (iPod) Output" from the MODE menu, you will be presented with a dialog that is (hopefully) self-explanatory. You can select one of the existing PRESETS, or create your own. I'd recommend you only create new presets if you are completely familiar with FFMPEG and legal combinations of codecs/file formats.
You can choose (via the dialog) to output to either DVD Only (which will work just like previous versions of DVD-RB), DVD and MOBILE, or MOBILE Only.
After making your selections you just run DVD-RB as always. MOBILE encoding will take place after standard DVD segment encoding (if selected). The audio will be converted to the format specified in the PRESET. For example, iPod video typically uses AAC.
Right now only one AC3 Stream can be selected for MOBILE output. The default is stream 0x80, which is the most common default. You can select an alternate stream by adding a line to the "[Mobile]" area of the REBUILDER.INI file. In this example substream 0x81 is selected:
[Mobile]
Substream=0x81
A better method of audio stream selection will be added to a future version. Also for testing purposes a variable called "FrameLimit" can also be added to the "[Mobile]" area of REBUILDER.INI. It will only encode the first "n" number of frames for each recognized title. For example, this line would only encode the first 2000 frames of each selected PGC:
[Mobile]
FrameLimit=2000
The final output of the MOBILE encoding is stored in a folder called MOBILE in the output directory.
If you plan to play back or test on your computer, you must ensure you have a player that supports the specified format(s). For example, Windows Media Player by default may not play .MP4 file formats (used by the iPod). Apple's Quicktime player does. You have to ensure appropriate codecs exist on your system!!! DVD-RB DOES NOT INSTALL OR CONFIGURE ANY ADDITIONAL CODECS ON YOUR SYSTEM.
The REBUILD phase is not required for this feature, as final output is created during ENCODE, but the REBUILD phase is still accomplished in One-Click mode in case a DVDFILES directory is also being created. It may also be used in future updates depending upon direction(s) taken. Running REBUILD on a MOBILE only encode will not hurt anything -- it will just be exceptionally fast (as nothing actually happens).
DVD Rebuilder shows a status dialog while FFMPEG is executing. If you would like to see the actual FFMPEG command line being executed, you can double-click on the "FFMPEG Visual Interface" dialog's background and the command line will be copied to the clipboard.
PRESETS and/or encoding parameters included in a PRESET can be changed without a need to rerun the PREPARE phase. A change in audio stream selection, however, requires reaccomplishment of the PREPARE phase (audio is demultiplexed into the working directory during PREPARE). Note that double-clicking on one of the PRESETS in the PRESET dialog allows you to change settings. Be careful -- setting incorrect, illogical, or illegal values can result in encoding failure. If you save the presets to a new name, you must exit the dialog and select it again for the new PRESET to show as a selection. Right now the only way to remove a PRESET or rearrange the display order is to manually edit the MOBILE.INI file.
In MOBILE encoding entire PGCs are encoded as a single entity. As such, there is no method for "pausing/resuming" encoding. Please remember that cancelling an encode will stop the current encode abnormally and will very likely render the resulting output unplayable. DVD Encoding, however, continues to support pausing/resuming.
Links removed. Beta testing completed.
Remember, though -- it will only work for registered VIP users.
If you want to help test it, please provide testing feedback via this thread. It is very much appreciated.
Now I gotta go and get some sleep. :cool: Thanks!

I'd like to test it out but am a bit concerned it might affect any normal backups I make.
Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but can I install this beta in a new folder so that I have both DVD-RB Pro 1.12.1 and the new beta installed simultaneously, or do I only have to have only one installed at a time?
cheers

This is a very nice feature to see implemented. As always, thank you for all your hard work :)
As for a bug:
Everything seemed to work, but as far as I can tell the audio was never encoded or muxed into the final MP4.

I chose Movie Only, not sure if that changes what Rebuilder chooses to encode in Mobile mode. Does it choose it by size like a DVD encode? I am just wondering if it will be able to work on TV seasons.
One thing that might have messed this encode up, was that Enable "Output" Directory was not checked, under the Mode tab. However when I installed this version, the Work and Output directories were set up. In the Mobile folder, in the work directory, there is one file named LAYER_CAKE_0001.MP4.
If there is anything else I can provide to help, please tell me. Anyways, thanks again.

I'd like to test it out but am a bit concerned it might affect any normal backups I makeThe two types of encodes work fairly independently of each other. If you do a normal backup (without selecting MOBILE) it will work exactly as always. I've done numerous standard DVD backups with it (in testing) and v1.20.0 is the next upgrade to v1.12.1. Frankly the standard DVD encoding part should be completely stable -- it's only the MOBILE functions that are in beta status.
version 1.20.0 .. it will work with Prococer and CCE right without any problem. right? Yes, it works exactly as always. The MOBILE (iPod) function is just an "extra feature" added on. You can use it -- or ignore it, whatever suits your needs. In fact if you read the History for this version you will see that it includes several fixes and improvements for the "standard" modes.
I chose Movie Only, not sure if that changes what Rebuilder chooses to encode in Mobile mode. Does it choose it by size like a DVD encode? I am just wondering if it will be able to work on TV seasons.Are you quite sure it didn't encode the audio? From looking at the directory it appears to have demuxed it properly (that's the AC3 file). The final output will be in a directory labeled "MOBILE" -- you are correct in assuming that LAYER_CAKE_0001.MP4 is the final output. It includes the audio and video (multiplexed). Based upon your selection the video will be MPEG4 and the Audio will be AAC. It should playback on your iPod or player (assuming you have a player capable of MP4 playback). Movie-Only should work fine. The only difference is that movie-only will output only the largest PGC on the disc -- while "Full Backup" mode will encode all PGCs larger that about 15 minutes into separate video files.

First test here - I got no audio either. Tested on PowerDvD 7, Showtime and Quicktime 7.
Using the standard presets and framelimit=2000 (only audio in the VTS was 0x80 - like a63548, it demuxed fine)
Video looks good though.

Made a test run last night in batch mode.
First iPOD, second XviD, different output folders of course. ;)
The first thing I realized, FFMPEG encodet a XviD file in my iPOD folder instead of MP4.
Anyway I went to bed and found my PC frozen today morning, so there isn't much to report.
I'll try again without batch mode today and report back.

Or maybe it wasn't in my ini because I didn't allow RB to overwrite it?

Cu RippraffNot in DVD-RB right now. It does the ENCODE and MUX all in one step. If you want to test, though, you could add the line:
FrameLimit=2000
To the "[Mobile]" section of REBUILDER.INI. It will limit each PGC to encoding only the first 2000 firames. I used it a lot in testing.

What happens when you open the AVS in Windows Media Player? Any errors?

Ahh.. I think I see it. It's that European "," again. The DelayAudio() should be set to ".00" --- arggghhh...
I'll fix it and post again!

Good idea, Sherlock ;), script error in column 72
audio=NicAC3Source("E:\TEST\D2VAVS\VTS08_PGC_00001.AC3", 2).DelayAudio(,00).amplify(1.2)
Please count yourself. :D

Edit: That's really amazing, you've found it already!
Edit2: Changing it to .00 gives a playable file with 0x81 audio. :)

Ok. I updated to v1.20.2 in the first post of this thread. I also added a zip download that has just the EXE file.
Note to everyone: If you haven't installed using at least v1.20.1 -- the EXE only download will not work until you do...

How does the new version handle discs then - does it dump the menu and encode movie and extras to individual files? Does it handle episode discs (so I can put all of 24 on my iPod!)?

Yes it does, and yes you can. It looks through the disc and encodes all PGCs that are over about 15 minutes long (except menus) as individual video files. Menus, etc, are ignored by the MOBILE encoder. But the D2V files, etc, are still created in case you want to do a normal DVD backup as well.
One thing to watch out for -- if you ever stop and start over, the MOBILE folder is cleared...

Can the 15 minute length be changed? Not sure why I'd want to yet, but I might in the future.

Not right now. But I'll add it to the "[Mobile]" area of the INI.
@All
Here's a note, by the way, on the AudioAmplify setting... it is a multiplier of the original volume. So setting it to .5 cuts the volume in half, 1.5 increases it by 50%, etc... I had to add that because I'm really fed up with AC3 steams that have a ridiculously low volume. Careful, though, too much increase will cause clipping on high volume areas.

@jdobbs
Haven't tried 1.20.2 yet, but removed FrameLimit=2000 from the ini and re-run encode (without prepare) => ended in a complete movie with sound and everything's in sync. :)

I am brazilian and there are some DVDs without Portuguese audio, then I need Portuguese subtitles to see the movie.
Is there any option to put a subtitle in the video (not as separate file in the container)?

DoesFFMPEG use x264 for it's H.264 support? And will PSP profiles be created (sorry if they are already there as I haven't looked yet)? Could you also mux to the PMP container for the homebrew PMP Player on the PSP? Also, are subtitles supported?
Man I have a lot of questions, maybe I just need to download and test :D

Good idea. "Robot Chicken" eps. are less than 15 minutes.
