Hey!

I realize that this may sound like a real lame question :) But I'd really like to know how fast a P4 is with the DivX4 codec when encoding from mpeg2 with resizing and all that. Like bicubic reszizing to 640*272 or so. The reason is that I can get a P4 rather cheap but I wont buy it if it's much slower than an AMD XP. So is there someone out there with a P4 that's willing to give me some numbers?

according to that article p4 and athlon xp are almost equal.
but consider this, there's a chance DivxDev will optimize divx4 for athlon cpus which could make it even faster. also athlon is noticibly faster in almost all other programs..unless they are specificly optimized for p4 (very few). and memory and mobos for athlons are generaly cheaper.

And I'd suggest not to read that link unless you already know some facts about encoding. As most of here probably know by now, THG does not know anything usable about video encoding.

If I do not guess incorrectly, that article is full of errors and mistakes. (I did not bother to read it further than a few lines here and there)

Thanks for your answer, the article helped to give a clearer picture on how fast the P4 can perform. I'm sure they're not the best guys out there to test this thing :) But it gave me a general idea on how fast the P4 after all is. Everyone including me, should buy a AMD XP because they are so much more priceworthy, but as I said, I can get a P4 at a very GOOD price, due to something in sweden called "personalköp" wich means that the company you work for can sell computers dirctly to you and that means that one will pay the computer before the TAX is drawn from your salary, and as many allready know, sweden has VERY high TAXes so if one has 40% TAX that means 40% discount on the original price.

they may not have best quality or speed or use proper programs, but they put both cpus throu same tests which makes it valid speed comparison guide.

This is absolutely true. As long as one remembers not to take all the statements as facts. Yet, it's easy to compare different hardware doing the same task and will give you a good overview.
