View Full Version : Remove Old Codec's / Get The Good Ones I Need !

When I first got my computer, I downloaded tons of codecs (not knowing what I was doing). I still struggle with finding tutorials / methods that work right for me – there is SO MUCH information out there, and I just don’t have that much time to devote…

Anyway, Here is my equipment:

Computer:
Pentium IV w/ 3.2GB Hyperthread processor / 1GB Ram / 200GB HD / Windows XP-SP2

Capture Card:
ATSC 110 Video Tuner Card (Kworld Digital/Analog HDTV Tuner PCI Card) (http://static.tigerdirect.com/pdf/Kworld_ATSC-110_datasheet.pdf)
Philips SAA713X, Hybrid Capture Device (I think this is known as the chipset?)

Video Card:
eVGA GeForce 6200 Turbo Cache PCIe supporting 128M (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-detailsInactive.asp?Sku=E145-5126)

Here is what I would like to do:

1) Purchased Beyond TV which works fine as my pvr / nothing fancy, not HD, just normal coaxial cable from the wall to my card. Capture as MPEG-2 (8,000 kbs). Files are pretty big. I use the option “Showsqueeze” to encode the mpegs to divx, then delete the mpegs. I’ve played a good bit with the divx settings, but cannot get to the point I want.

What I want: I’ve come across other videos / tv shows that have been encoded as divx & xvid where the file size is like 350mb for 45 minutes of video. Quality is unbelievably excellent. I know the original shows were most likely captured in high-def at 20,000 kbs. I would like to come as close as I can?

2) Have a Sony Handycam that records on 8mm tapes. My capture card has S-Video in, so I want to capture analog video to my computer (highest quality / lowest file size). Would like to eventually record old family tapes to DVD.

Problem – I have so many codecs on my computer, I think I’m not using the correct ones. Nor do I know how to remove old ones, or which ones are actually doing the work? At last try, I was able to use VirtualDub & record video as a huge AVI file. That’s about where I lose it. Is there somewhere I can take a screen shot of my codecs so someone here can help me delete the old ones (not used ones)??

I want to follow the doom9 guide:
Capture Guide (capture analogue sources with VirtualDub/AviSynth) (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/capture/start.html)
Which seems to be extremely thorough and easy to follow.

Thanks -
(Sorry for the long post)
Rob.

Codec Sniper works pretty good for, well, getting rid of codecs. You might want to unload most of the ones you've got and just add them back as you need to.

Ehm, better watch-out using Codec-Sniper since you can b0rk your system beyond return ... and you'll need to format again :)

Only remove those you know you installed yourself and those which are marked as broken, but even by removing some broken ones you sometimes end up with bad surprises ...

Rather uninstall those codecs the "correct" way : using the uninstaller provided with them. They almost all have an uninstall procedure (DivX, XviD, x264vfw, On2 codecs, 3ivX).

I can't remember if the DivX 3.11a hack had an uninstall feature, but it was most of the time bundled as the silly "DivX ;-)" thing, along with the hacked radium MP3 codec.
