ok, I hope this is the right forum here, but because I dont know how I could manage it to have my NTSC dvd viewed on my TV screen via PAL standalone player (if possible), what I have to do for that, it might be misplaced here in this forum, in that case move it elsewhere please.

I have the problem that I own some PAL and some NTSC dvds, but I have only a PAL standalone player at my tv set. I used to watch the movies mainly on PC, where this ntsc / Pal case was not an issue. But since my new tv screen is bigger I'd like to switch over to it, but then I have the problem that I simply cant view the NTSC ones there. I also dont want to use the pc / svideo thing, because its too wearisome to that each time (when having a standalone player anyway) and the pc is sometimes occupied by somebody else etc. = the pc/tv solution is simply no solution for me. it should be able to be viewed on my TV via my standalone player.

some things:

1. buying a new /2nd player is no sulition (if there is another one existing how I could have my ntsc dvds somehow play on my current one). im no money mule .

2. lending the dvd in PAL format is also NOT a solution, because sometimes the differences between some of them on NTSC and PAL are too big, like there could be cuttings, differentces in the image quality, some have even been remastered from a HD source, which is simply not available on PAL etc. just because a dvd title is published on both systems it doesnt mean that the quality is the same. and I want to maintan the quality of the format versions I own and not trade it for inferior ones and single viewings of a rented versions. im not renting films which I already own.

so if a solution does exist how I could view my NTSC dvd on my PAL standalone player + TV screen, then enlighten me please.
Thanks.

Most PAL DVD players can (be made to) spin NTSC disc's... However, you'll need a TV that supports both PAL and NTSC colour systems too!

hm, the dvd is actually readable and the dvd player' company logo is also displayed ok with that disc. but as soon as the menu appears if seems to be a little too "narrow" and its only displayed in black & white colours and there are lots of strange signs and effects going all across the screen etc. so this might more likely be a TV issue in that case ?
if yes, I guess the only option is to use PAL dvds, any possbility how or if I could transform my NTSC dvd to some kind of PAL one ?

Of course you can. There are many threads treating this issue on the forum :search:

allright, did and found something, but I need more time to go through it. just 2 quick questions, in case I'd do that would it be 23,976 or 29,97 frames for the NTSC dvds and could this all be done lossless, or would I somehow have to sacrifice a bit quality along the way ?

You'll lose some quality, no doubt about that, but it won't be noticeable if you do a nice 2-pass VBR encoding.

Anyway, if it's a movie, it will be 23,976fps for sure. Here you speed-up to PAL 25p (p for progressive, so optimal video quality; audio quality will depend on the tools you use -pitch correction highly recommended!-);
or convert to PAL 25i (i for interlaced, so average video quality; optimal audio quality as you won't have to touch it at all)

Ill lose quality even when it should remain the complete DVD-DL film ? :S

Yup, because you have to re-encode anyway. But the quality loss shouldn't be visible if you do things right.
