I was in Best Buy the other day and I saw a mountain of X-Box 360's in front of each register.
All I could think about was last year at this time people were waiting for trucks to come in just in case a few showed up. People were posting on the net who had them in stock and they were selling for up to $1000 on ebay.
Another year another crazy rush to get the latest and greatest system that you just have to have now.
In 6 months every store will have 10 on the shelf waiting for a customer, now every store will have 10 customers waiting for the one PS3 that arrives.
I understand really wanting something, but man these rushes are just nuts.

I think the Cabbage patch dolls put something in the water.

I think it's really worth its money, since its is a BD player AND a HD console in-one for only 500$ (or 430$ in Japan).
So it's only natural for so many people to rush to get it and be one of the first owners (I think you can proudly look back in 5 years and say to yourself: wow! at that time, it was the last word in the gaming world!).

But, when the PAL console comes out, I won't buy it right away, I'll wait until the price drops, may be in 2 or 3 years -- I just can't afford 700$+ :D

at that time, it was the last word in the gaming world!Just to set the record straight.. when the PS3 was first announced, it was the fastest thing there was.. but that's no longer the case. A nice G80 system beats anything there is (for a huge pricetag though) at this particular point in time.

Well, I wasn't particularly thinking about PC technology, I think it is a world of its own. A PC is for me a productivity device in the first place.
Still, it's amazing what a 300MHz PS2 with 32MB RAM and a 150MHz GPU can draw on a TV screen... you guessed right, completely different technologies ;)

the thing I don't like , in the x boxes and the ps1-2-3..., there is nothing really new in the way you act and play with the game console.

only nintendo have found a new system. this is years we have to play with these remote controllers, and outsie of better quality , faster processor, the games are still the same, u interact in the same way like in 1985, and this is really boring...(press A to fire, B to jump, etc....)

somebody has tried the new nintendo, how it is?

"Never change a running system" ;)

Nintendo has another philosophy. I just offered my aging Nintendo64 to my 9-year old cousin. Nintendo is the only one to offer a wide range of kid-suitable games, and the Wii won't be an exception, it even goes further with its kids/family-oriented controller (I was always laughing at kids when they play with a normal controller, how they move it in all possible directions and all :D)

Best Buy may have acted selfishly by not have wanting squatters on their property, but the store did these guys a favor by booting them.

My PC is my game machine. But, certainly, the consoles have more power than their relative specs would indicate. It really helps when you know exactly what hardware you're writing a game for. PC games are also written for the the lowest common denominator, with the only real way to take advantage of the latest PC hardware is to up the resolution. IMO, high resolution is an inefficient use of resources.

For example, look at this:

http://www.gamecaption.com/2006/10/29/direct-x-9-vs-direct-x-10/

Any of today's mainstream computers with with a good DirectX 9 video card could do either of these images. It's just that you'd be limited to VGA resolution to make it playable (a tad better than PS2 resolution). But, you see, MS has no intention of supporting such graphics on the PCs we now have, so when you play Flight Simulator X, you'll instead have the lamer graphics, just cranked to a much higher resolution than VGA. Or, you can upgrade to a duel-core CPU with a G80 card and get these sweet graphics in a high resolution, even though they'd still be sweet at a low resolution on an old PC.

@ doobie
I can understand that you use your PC for gaming, but for me the game catalog on PC is too limited to call it a "gaming platform". There are just too many genres absent from the PC platform...

PS: you mentionned something real good about resolutions. You can enjoy a game through better effects more than through higher resolutions.

Any information on media playback capabilities? High Profile AVC on a USB Hard Disk for instance?

And can the PS3 be connected to a computer monitor since people are far more likley to have a HiRes monitor than a HDTV?

CruNcher
15th November 2006, 02:23
The PS3 currently seems to only support Main Profile from HDD playback, nothing official yet but that's what the specs of the Machine says, see official site specs. Ofcourse for BD High Profile support is working so it could be also from the HDD unless it was restricted to BD playback only.

The thing that amazes me about the PS3 is that it actually has a Compact Flash and SD cards slots in addition to the Memory Stick slot. I've never seen Sony include support for another memory card type, so it makes me hopeful that whoever is in charge of the PS3 has a much more open attitude.

I'm still not going to buy one for a long time, but I did think that was really cool.

I checked a little on line about the ps3, it is sweet.
it is easy to open for modding or change hardrive, it s BR and u can play movies.

that s a perfect movie center for all ur div x movies.( it is MPEG4)
it plays pictures, music,...and play all old PS2 games.

com'on guys, is that not sweet?
the price sounds correct when u see all you can do.

in europe, the release date will be for march 2007, no need to rush as cool games will come later.

The big chip at the bottom left is a PS2 CPU/GPU combo.

I agree, compared to other computers the PS3 really does seem to be good value. Doesn't a useless Mac Mini cost 500$ or something? In fact, now that the resolution is no longer limited to PAL/NTSC I wonder if a PS3 could be made into something of a PC replacement using Linux, Open Office etc. I guess it depends on whether Sony is interested in this.

johnhamler1
16th November 2006, 16:45
i think they only problem we can have playing PS2 games is the resolution.
ps2 games are 4/3 when ps3 games are 16/9

so i don't know how it will handle the format conversion, it seems USA will tests that for europe.but it s good to know you can keep your old games.

I am not a gamer and most games bore me(except sport games), I have never own a game console (except my laptop),this time I could crack for the PS3...(specially for the blue ray player and the hard drive inside for div X))

"the PlayStation 3 also adds two additional chips: the PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine and IO bridge (CXD2973GB)."

another good thing I see, the ps3 uses a 2.5 HDD.
many gamers and movie watchers will probably get bigger HDD in the futur, and HDD price will decrease.

or buy a big 1000 gig 7200 rpm HDD and plug it in a USB port.

From what I've gathered these days, it won't be too hard to install some Linux distro on the PS3, and then we're free to use it as an ordinary computer. So, yeah, it can play any media file you have right now, and the BR-drive seems to work under linux.
It's even possible to connect 3.5" HD by some fancy cabling, so it has the potential to become a great HTPC with PS3/2 capability.

actually, I'm more interested the PS3's encoding power, it might be a good c/p powerhouse before we get cheap Quad Cores.......

About Linux on PS3

Sony forbids, however, the direct access to the graphic processor !
A hardware acceleration is not possible ! Not for 2D,3D or OpenGL !
Only Framebuffer !

However, other applications like Open Office, internet browsers or e-mail clients run straight away as far as they get by main memories of the Playstation 3 on the 256 MByte...

Thx for the link. Sounds to me like it could be used as a pretty good non-PC-gaming machine i.e a media, office, email, web and PS1/2/3 gaming machine. Maybe even PVR with USB hardware? Sounds good for 600$. And I wonder what kind of encoding performance it can do. Shouldn't be too hard to test it now with the Linux tools that are mentioned in the link.

BTW what about the Xbox 360? It's been out for a year so is it being used in this way by anybody?

one of the guys here (finally) had his delivered yesterday. i think customs knew it was a PS3 and decided to annoy the rich nerd who ordered it from japan...

not impressed. i didn't see any blu-ray movies, but gaming wise the release titles are kinda standard. i've seen better on a PC.

also, in spite of the unit only being out for a week, and having 3 release games to play on it, we were required to upgrade the system software from v 1.00 to v 1.02. only 1 of the 3 games had the required software on it, the other option being plug it into the network.

Not trying to be apologetic to Sony as they have screwed up way too much so early in the race (no hardware scaler? ROFL ), but we are dealing with launch software, you shouldn't expect Gears of War-quality (http://streamingmovies.gamespy.com/xbox360/article/741/741786/gearsofwarpromo_102506_wmvhd.wmv) just yet. Besides, comparing this to PC gaming is unfair as consoles are closed platforms (both one of their greatest strengths and one of their greatest weaknesses) and high-end PCs have surpassed those specs for quite a while now.

First benchmarks I've seen: http://rian.s26.xrea.com/

Dhrystone v2.1
PS3 Cell 3.2GHz: 1879.630
PowerPC G4 1.25GHz: 2202.600
PentiumIII 866MHz: 1124.311
Pentium4 2.0AGHz: 1694.717
Pentium4 3.2GHz: 3258.068

Linpack 100x100 Benchmark In C/C++ (Rolled Double Precision)
PS3 Cell 3.2GHz: 315.71
PentiumIII 866MHz: 313.05
Pentium4 2.0AGHz: 683.91
Pentium4 3.2GHz: 770.66
Athlon64 X2 4400+ (2.2GHz): 781.58

Hopefully this can be drastically improved with future optimisations.

Well, no one's going to use the PS3 as a scientific number-crunching workhorse, so those benchmarks are better seen as a "because we could". Games are the only way to remotely take advantage of the system's capabilities, currently, much like pc video cards. It's just so different from traditional desktop and MP servers that traditional benchmarks can't map to it at all.

Doobie
22nd November 2006, 17:28
It should be expected that the PS3 would be crippled to Linux. Sony doesn't want to take big loss on each PS3 sold and not have a hand in the profits of the games sold for it. I wouldn't expect direct access to the PS3's graphics unit would be allowed.

The Linux benchmarks for the PS3 looks like Linux isn't taking advantage of the PS3's sub-processing units. When that is fixed, the PS3 will be great for scientific number crunching. If the numbers are to be believed, the Cell can runs at 218GFLOPS (with one sub-processing unit tied behind its back) which leaves the Intel chips in the distant dust. But, the real power lays in the graphics unit.

More on Performance: http://www.geekpatrol.ca/2006/11/playstation-3-performance/

Looks like PS3 will only be interesting if developers optimise software for the Cell CPU.

EDIT: it seems the tests were on a version of Linux doesn't even support the CPU fully while the upcoming Yellow Dog Linux will. Although I have no idea if this means that performance will increase with YDL or that it won't make a difference until the applications are also optimized.

prime numbers (1,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,31... you can divide by 1 and by themselves only).

the ps3 would be perfect for some universities looking for new numbers and who share the research with other personal computers.

and i think their is even a price to win, like 100'000$ if you find a new prime number.

i remember, i shared my microprocessor last years to win the price, my laptop is too slow for this type of calculus ...and i had to give up!(3 weeks for a prime number to analyze against 8 hours to rebuild a movie)

of course this is an example of what u can do with ur ps3 or xbox360, u could use the ps3 in aerodynamic research where fast systems are needed like a "super calculator" and maybe you will be a happy winer!.
