View Full Version : Extras Are Almost Like Still Pictures--Adjust Steal Space or Half D1?

I did a backup of March of the Penguins using RB Pro with HC Encoder set for Best(Slowest), and 33% Steal Space and Half D-1 for Extras and I took out the Spanish Audio track. The Extras came out pretty bad. They almost are like a series of still pictures.
I ripped with RipIt4Me in 1 click mode, did the FixVTS thing and ran it though VobBlanker to clean up a small Unreferenced Section and blank out some trailers.
According to DVD Shrink, with the Spanish removed this whole file is 6538 MB with 3470MB going to the movie and 3057 MB in extras. The Menu is only 9MB. In Shrink, if I set the Extras to 50% reduction, the movie would go off at a very healthy 80%.
I'm figured I'd keep the 33% on Steal Extras and not use Half D1.
Is this likely to best remedy the still pictures type effect?
The way RBPro works, if I Steal Space from Extras a total of 35% and don't use half space, does that compress the extras 35% or does that compress them 35% from some value of compression that was already going to be applied to the whole file?
I think RBPro would probalby give a pretty decent picture with a straight 50% reduction because I've found DVDShrink gives a pretty nice picture down as low as 65% compression and I figured RB could do better than Shrink.

Posting separately so as not to make the OP confusing....
Here's what the log says about the backup of Peguins I'm doing now with 33% Extras, no Steal Space...
Reduction Level for DVD-5: 64.4%
Improvement from Extra Reduction: 30.1%
Does that mean the Reduction Level for the main movie is now at 95.5%, or that it would have been 30.1% lower than 64.4 if I hadn't taken 33% from Steal Space? Neither of those seem right. Is it something else?

In your example the original needs to be reduced to 64.4% in order to fit onto a DVD-5. That is what DVD-RB tells you. This reduction would be applied equally to the Main Feature and to the Extras.
When you now request to steal 33% from the extras, it will reduce the extras further to (100%-33%) = 67% of the 64.4% = 43.2% of the original size of the Extras.
Example:
Assuming the original size of the Extras were 1600kB and the original size of the Feature was 5100kB.
Without stealing space from extras, the Extras would get 64.4% of 1600kB = 1030 kB, and the Feature would get 64.4% of 5100 = 3285kB.
After stealing 33% from the Extras. the Extras get 43.2% of 1600 = 690 kB
The gained space from Extra reduction is 1030-690=340kB which is added to the Feature, hence the Feature gets 3285+340=3625kB which is an improvement of (3625-3285)/3285=10.4%.
This is how I understand it.

So the feature = 83.78% (64.4 + (64.4 * .301))
and the extras = 42.95% (64.4 - (64.4 * .333))
The amount of improvement in the feature is a function of how large the extras are.
[Edit:] I must be getting feeble minded. Looking back it appears I've repeated pretty much the same thing that Sharc said in the previous post.

You mentioned that the extras are like a series of still pictures. That doesn't sound like anything related to bitrate. A better bet might be that is might be caused by the preprocessing. Unless, of course, you accidentally selected the option in DVD-RB for converting extras to "slideshow".

And there is absolutely no need to run the rip thru VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm). As powerful as VobBlanker is, the tiny amount of unreferenced material will not affect anything. And, of course, you can delete the unwanted streams by simply placing an X over them in DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/).
Having said all that, going 1/2D1 for the extras at such low BR might improve the viewing. 1/2D1 AND 33% is over the top as you can see. Maybe 1/2D1 and 10%.
Or better still - watch the extras once (how many times will you watch em anyway) and do a movie and menus encode.

Hi,
I solved this problem a different way. I just redid it using a DL disk with no compression. I got a working disk now and since the cinematography in this movie is spectacular it's even better so thats one backup that is put to bed. Thanks.
