View Full Version : How do I convert 5.1 AC3 to 5.1 AAC?

Hi everyone, I've been trying to make near lossless encodes using Staxrip's profiles for a while now, but have come across a problem. The resulting AAC files made using the inbuilt 5.1 200-250kbps AAC profile puts the channels in the wrong place! Does anyone have any suggestions on another way to convert the audio? That, or a way to map the channels correctly during playback?

It has to do with correcting the channel mapping on transcoding.
AC3 is L-C-R-Ls-Rs-LFE while WAV is L-R-C-LFE-Ls-Rs and AAC is C-L-R-LFE-Ls-Rs. If this remapping is not properly done either by the AC3 decoder, the AAC encoder will take the wrong channels from the input therefore affecting the mapping of the output. If the decoding is correct, but the AAC encoder doesn´t remap properly, the output will be altered too.
U have to make sure remapping takes place.

Cheers.

You could always check AAC FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68300#post424070). ;-)

Ok, so how can I encode the file so that the remapping can take place? What tools would I need? I've been playing with my media player (Media Player Classic) forever and can't get any remapping to occur during decoding :(

I suggest you use Kurtnoise13's excellent "BeLight" audio encoding application...

Feed it with an 6Ch AC3 source and it will generate an 6Ch AAC-LC or HE encode. With a choice of AAC encoding engines...

I've already used BeLight, but can't work out any way for remapping to occur.

What I need is, either for a way to remap the audio during the encoding or decoding process. Can anyone recommend a suitable media player + codec or a suitable encoder for this purpose?

I've already used BeLight, but can't work out any way for remapping to occur. If you use BeLight 0.22beta_20061002 with the CT encoder engine, you don't have to re-map anything. It perfectly maps 6Ch AC3 sources to 6Ch AAC-LC or 6Ch AAC-HE...
