How to find info on encoded mpeg video file

Hi does someone know of a tool or any way that I can find out info on a video file.

I have an mpeg file and I want to know how it was created and whether its a mp4 file or not, the extension is .mpg but the size of the file is around 120mb and runtime is 45mins.

The file plays fine on my dvd player but doesn't play on my vcd player, its in data format on the cd, not dvd or vcd (standard mpg file in folder)

I check out the properties of the file in Windows Media Player and all I get is written down below.

If someone can point out a way through which this file was created it would be great, if someone can tell me of a tool that gives details on video files that would be great too. :)

Bit Rate --
Media Type - Video
Video Size - 352x288
Aspect Ratio - 11:9
Audio Codec - AC3Filter
Video Codec - MPEG Video Decoder

Try gspot for the info you need.

But, you're asking for trouble when you start talking about a file you have but you didn't create. Please make sure you read the Forum rules again. :thanks:

I can suggest you use TMPGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/). The old 2.5 version will be enough. You go to File / MPEG Tools / De-multiplex and browse your file there. It should then give you all details.

The video file in question is a home video file created by my cousin about a year or so back.
I was checking out some stuff and found this file on one of the cds.

I can post a snapshot of the video to prove its a home video if anyone wants confirmation.

Secondly, I've got the buzz for trying out different softwares and encoding movies at the moment, all for personal usage so I might ask some silly questions, this does not mean I'm pirating :p
I'm just not as experienced as most of the other people here.

Well I know that the file was encoded with an Mpeg1 encoder using a very low bitrate and it plays on my DVD in file mode.

Can you recomend a good MPEG1 encoder, which can encode in low and high bitrates?

But don't think you can make the quality better by re-encoding your file with a higher bitrate. What is lost is lost and can't be recovered...
