3. After I rip the dvd, i got only vob file. How can i convert it
to AVI or MPEG? Is there any ripper let me rip straight to
AVI or MPEG?
4. How do i maintain the menu when rip the dvd?
5. What software is popular to create a dvd movie disc (with menu)?
6. VirtualDub is a good software for adding subtile and edit movie.
Why does it only support avi and mpeg1? Is there any alternative?
I tried virtualdubmod but it only up to 1.5 of virtual dub.
7. What is the most popular video format nowaday?

1. It's a working option. RipIt4Me is another one.
2. No, they're entirely different programs. DVD Decrypter has also ceased development.
3. AutoGK, but it can't handle disks with advanced copy protection (If SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter can't rip it, AutoGK can't encode directly from the disk).
4. Rip the full disk in file mode, which is the only method DVDFab Decrypter uses.
5. DVD Shrink.
6. There is a VirtualDub MPEG-2 version.
7. I use .avi most of the time, but I think .mkv is becoming more popular.
8. VirtualDubMod.
9. VobSub. Use SubRip to convert to .srt subs.
10. Depends on the "to" and "from" formats.
11. "Full processing" re-encodes the video. If you don't select a compression method it will convert it to full, uncompressed video that's usually around 35-40 GB for a two-hour movie. "Direct Stream Copy" does just what it describes - copies it into a new container without altering the video or audio (unless you've selected changes in the audio).
12. Depends - "Pan&Scan" info is lost when you convert a DVD to an .avi file. The DVD will zoom and pan to parts the authors felt was the important subject matter. "Letterbox" is the full, wide-aspect video that will display with black bars top and bottom on a normal TV. If you're resizing for an .avi and trying to fill the screen, you can only crop the sides to a fixed position.

hi thx a lot for your reply. I want to clarify some more:
1. So What dvd ripper software should i use now (autogk, smartripper, dvd2avi....) I want to rip dvd straight to avi or mpg (or divx, xvid..) and remove the protection. Its seems so many software to choose from. How do you usually rip your dvd?

2.Virtualdubmod and Virtualdub Mpeg-2, which one you preferer? cause both of them support mpeg2.
3.For avi file, is xvid is common video codec? I check most of my download movie and they use xvid codec in avi.
4.When I want to add the subtitle to the movie, should i choose Full Processing Mode or Direct Streem Copy?
5. After I convert a movie (*.vob) to *.avi, the aspect ratio
of the original file (16:9) get smaller to 5:4, so actually
the video size remain the same but the screen become smaller.
Why can't i keep the aspect ratio? and what is the solution?
BTW, how to compress a dvd to size of 700mb? what is the common setting (i mean in terms of compression, audio codec, video codec etc).
6.What is the software to use to record all the voice from sound card?

Look forward for your reply
Yours sincerely,

You can't if the disk has an advanced copy protection.

For the rest, read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), particularly 1, 1a and 6. I realize you didn't ask for help with downloaded material, but it's best not to mention it here at all. There are plenty of guides, FAQ's and other posts here for you to read and make informed decisions yourself.

I use DVD Decrypter (or RipIt4Me when necessary) and Gordian Knot. You can achieve a much better quality rip with the full GK than with AutoGK, although it's more work.
