Interlaced extras...

Hi all...

First off, I know this is the sort of question that has probably been asked a million times before. I did search, but I found a lot of different people giving a lot of different answers.. a lot of which contradicted each other.

I've been making an x264 backup of a tv series I bought on dvd (PAL). The episodes were fine - all progressive and simple to deal with. The extras however are a different story. They're 25fps and contain quite heavy and fairly constant interlacing.

I tried a few different deinterlacers, and in the end just settled on:

Tdeint(full=false, mode=2)

Obviously this gets rid of the interlacing quite nicely, but leaves me with blended frames.

Is there a way to deinterlace without blending like this? I'm not too worried about it, but if there is a way then it'd be nice to get it looking as good as I can.

Likely it was converted from interlaced NTSC. There are some special scripts that can try to fix these, but I'm no expert. I'm just learning how to go the other way :)

Or, you could double-rate deinterlace the footage and encode a 50fps xvid file. I'm being serious -- if you have 2 GHz or faster it will play back just fine, and you won't lose any motion.

looks to be 60i to 50i conversion. not compression friendly at all...

however, talking heads are very compression friendly, so it probably balances out.

you could encode it as interlaced, so long as you correctly determine the field order. ffdshow and xvid's native dshow decoders will bob-deinterlace on playback for you. it'll be a tad more efficient than bobbing before encoding, but give the same visual result and maintain the structure of the original.

the alternative is just plain old deinterlacing - the 60i to 50i conversion is not something "deblenders" like restore24 can handle nicely - waste of time if you ask me.

considering they're extras, quality can probably take a back seat to content.

Maybe I have misunderstood the question but to deinterlace to 25p without blending you discarding a field.

The original 50i fields apparently contain field blended 60i content. So chucking away half the fields just leaves half as many 60i blended images.
