I see that XviD is going to have it own certification now through XviD Solutions. Anyone know what manufactures are planning on getting XviD certification?

That would be a tough one to get.

Xvid (feels so odd, writing Xvid) highdef or even Xvid home certification would mean that the chipset should support every bell and whistle Xvid has to offer - 3 warp-point GMC, max. cons. b-vops 5, QPEL, CQMs (every one of them) etc. While some of the above is already possible with the currently available MPEG-4 players in the market (including the DivX certified ones), not one chipset I know supports every single advanced MPEG-4 ASP feature. But, going forward, Isibaar & Co. will probably work closely with the chipset/player manufacturers to ensure that every feature gets supported sooner or later. I have my money on the Zoran Vaddis family to at least give the certification a good, hard shot.

I recently contacted Michael Militzer regarding the conditions of use for their XviD logo on stand-alone players/devices.

Here's what he had to say: -you're right, three warp-point GMC is a big issue and there's no DVD player chipset available today that supports it in full. Hence, we don't request it for D1/PAL resolution players (Xvid home logo)

But we demand HD players (Xvid highdef logo) to support GMC with three warp-points. The ratio behind this is that our ultimate goal is to push _full_ ASP support (including full GMC support) into the next-generation CE devices.

As our program is royalty-free (unlike e.g. the DivX certification), it's not important for us to certify a large number of devices. Therefore, we knowingly set the standards very high. Goal is to trigger interest among device makers so they demand full GMC support from the chip makers.

This strategy proves successful as already one of the big chip makers is working with us to bring also 2/3 warp-point GMC support in its next- generation HD DVD chip sets...
I didn't ask Michael which "high-def" chip-set manufacturer XviD were working with...

yesterday it was pure speculation by me (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=895248&postcount=22)...

but now... hehe ;)

EDIT:

if you read carefully Michael Militzer's answer to SMD the guys at Xvid solutions are really smart:

Goal is to trigger interest among device makers so they demand full GMC support from the chip makers.

they're not asking chip-set manufacturers if it is possible to include all bells 'n whistles of xvid, no, they went straight toward the device makers :)

as celtic_druid stated yesterday:

XviD certification makes sense since I would bet that at least 90% of the content played back on current DivX hardware is actually encoded with XviD.

they convinced them that nowadays an xvid logo will certainly push sales figures more than a divx logo - but to get an xvid logo requires them to obey to very high standards...

that means that the guys at Xvid Solutions won't have to put any pressure to the chip-set manufacturers but the device makers itself have to convince the chip-set manufacturers :)

edit2: again, pure speculation and not based on substantiated infos

Well, good for the users. At least now the bitching about sub-standard SAPs and the apathy towards advanced ASP features towards would stop once the first Xvid Highdef player hits the market. The END to standalone compatibility issues!! Hurray!

oh wait a min, we still have to worry about Open-DML, rec-lists, DTS frames/chunk > 20..OK, the wait continues then..

but only "we" as some of the forum members... not the average joe playing a full blown ASP xvid encode with mp3 audio...

that's the main market share audiance ;)

@unskinnyboy

jeah but with all respect isn't it a bit to late for it slowly or should i say fast ASP gets replaced by AVC so i think it's rather useless now as this is slowly dieing and i have to say to a regard im happy with this as it was never the intention of that market to bring us consumers one good player but more like a zillion of bug driven Asia crap Product lines fastly shiped (and ofcourse build just look under the case of the first generation players, oh we did something wrong here some glue fix it *g* ) containerwise and sold by dumb resellers that had no idea what they actually selling there year after year :P.
I have to say im happy that this might be over finaly :)
