After reading many posts for rainbows, I still can't seem to remove the rainbows in my source successfully. So, after hesistating (I don't like taking up peoples time), I wonder if anyone could please help me try and remove the rainbows from this source!

It's from a DVD: Street Fighter II Uncut

I've tried: BiFrost, CNR2, and various derainbowing scripts i've found on this forum and none seem to do remove it properly, and if they do happen to remove it, mass colour bleeding is caused which I can't repair. Please help me! my current script looks like:

As you can see, there's still rainbowing :( any thoughts on how to fix this?

That's not rainbowing, in the video sense of the word... that's rainbowing in the real life sense. Wow. If that's right off a DVD, I have to say, worst color transfer ever. I don't think anything strong enough to remove that will be able to keep any chroma detail near affected areas, though it'd be possible to make a script to cause a little less damage.

The only way anyone can attempt to help is offering a short clip of the source, not result, though.

Yeah those screenshots are from the d2v file being loaded into VD, no filtering at all. Would a clip of around 2 minutes @ 1300 kbps in x264 be ok?

A chop of the DVD is needed, via dgindex, cuttermaran, or whatever.

Hi,

A mad idea. I've looked that rainbows are mainly located over lines. If you extract a mask with the lines (I suggest prewitt but I'm not an expert in masks - help- ) and do them pure black (with binarize filter) you can after replace (overlay, mt_merge,...) the rainbowed lines with neat black others.

Medianblur(0,4,4) could be useful as a building block.

... after some short fiddling:

Doesn't catch everything, but improves noticeably. Probably follow with one of the other derainbowers.

my advice: get the r4 PAL one when it comes out (should be a couple weeks).

we saw all the other region's discs, checked all the masters, and in the end decided to go out, buy the LD from Japan and transfer it ourselves.

the rainbows in _all_ the other sources are simply too high-amplitude to remove.

only problem with the r4 PAL one is crosstalk due to not having a really good LD player available, and the disc being CLV rather than CAV.

however, the japanese laserdisc is still on sale, so if you're a hardcore fan (like the guy who authored it here... you wouldn't believe how much this guy put in), you might want to buy the laserdisc and do your own DVD transfer :) with good enough equipment and this forum you'll be able to do a better job than we did.

But if you go the path Mug Funky recommends, try to see if you can find a Pioneer LD-V8000 laserdisc player somewhere. It was recommended by some of the folks over at OriginalTrilogy as being one of the best available and apparently it sells for cheap at eBay.

if only we'd had the time and budget to do that ourselves... sadly we find out masters are crap fairly late into the game, and delaying a release is usually not an option unless there's real big problems.

As mentioned, it's something to start with, not a "solution" ... it's spatial filtering only (and probably could & should be refined), but for *removal*, temporal filtering surely is mandatory.
FFT3DFilter usually has a good effect on rainbows, too. You might want to shoot after with s-th like

FFT3DFilter( sigma/2/3/4 = 2/8/12/4, bt=3, plane=3)

and merge that in by the given (or a more sensitive) edgemask. (Sigma's must be toyed with ... as big as needed, as small as possible.)

Fiddling can be done a lot ... but keep in mind my experience with animation and rainbowing is close-to-zero. This is not my world at all. ;)

In any case,

exactly that is the point where any filtering should hook in, isn't it? :)

@ didee: i'll take my hat off to you if you can get these rainbows without hurting the picture... it really has to be seen to be believed - by far the worst case of rainbows i've ever seen, but if you can rise to this challenge you'll be hailed as an hero :)

Oh, Yousendit wants me to "log in" to download the sample, hehe.
Motivation to fight NTSC rainbowing isn't that high for me, anyway ... imagine I fiddle a week or two to make it, despite not even needing it myself, and then you make the money with it - of course with fieldblending for a PAL release. Shudder. :D
For the moment, I'm busy with bobbing.

it's a progressive speedup, and the extras are motion-compensated to 50i...

i did use dehalo_alpha and seesaw on it, so maybe i should send you a copy? ;)

something that can fight PAL rainbows would be good - all the usual tools are designed for NTSC and don't work for PAL. i've got an ad-hoc script for it, but it could be better :)

I removed most of the rainbows to a level that i'm happy with, thanks very much to everyone who helped me out!
