I have tried to use tovid to convert AVI to DVD but it fails. The avi-file consists of xvid video and ac3 5.1 sound. So the sound is already dvd-compatible and should not have to be encoded again. Tovid is capable of extracting the ac3-sound and converting the video to m2v, but when they are about to be muxed into a mpeg2 file it fails just in the middle of the multiplexing. I suppose that sometimes the avi-file has been joined by two avi-files and there is something in the audio-frames (or header), that causes the failure. If I use the -force option in tovid, the sound is re-encoded as ac3 stereo but I want it to be 5.1.
But when I use Avidemux to create the dvd mpeg2-file, everything is working. Does anyone know what method Avidemux uses to multiplex video and audio? Is there a way to re-encode ac3 5.1 so that it's still ac3 5.1 and not just stereo?
