x264 movies basic questions..

Hi, I've surfed through the stickies and the search and haven't found enough things about this 'new' codec...

So lets go:
1 - I got a athlon xp2800+, 512 DDR, GFMX440 64MB video card. I downloaded a 1.1GB x264 720p movie, and there was a delay between sound and video, besides the visible fps that s***ed... is my hardware good enough to watch those videos properly? I first used the k-lite codec pack, now I installed all common codecs separately.

2 - how to optimize the playback? (besides getting new hardware)

3 - Are there possible complications associated to the OS? (XP SP2 in here, I mean bad configuration, unwanted dll's, too much dust inside the monitor( kidding)?).

Because unless I'm very lazy I couldn't find the specific information...

Some relevant things:
I used to use the k-lite codec pack, not anymore, now I use each codec separately, only the needed ones.
I already have CoreAVC as the H.264 decoder instead of ffdshow, like some people advised me to.

Are there any other possible implications about the low performance playback of those 1280x720p x264 movies?
