View Full Version : Huge total length of muxed video

After a view trials (and errors  ), I managed to encode a video (X264 MP4) and the audio (tried MP3 and AAC) and a problem arose:

When I playback the unmuxed video (with no sound) it shows the correct length of 14:06 minutes.
When I playback the unmuxed audio, it shows the correct length (14:06 minutes).

But when I mux both, the lenght is suddenly 2:13 hours.

Can anyone point me to the error I'm making?

what tools are you using for muxing? what container are you muxing to? what tool are you using to display the length?

Did you happen to include subtitles in that, specifically a srt one?

@Muxing: I used MP4 Muxer. (MeGUI of course)

The tools with which I tried to play /read out the length were
*VLC Media player
* GOM Player
* Mediaplayer Classic

All three with tha latest version.

@Subs: No subs.

is the audio and video in sync when playing?

Knuffi

Perfectly in sync.

I also can "fast forward" the whole 2:13 hours. But after 14:06 everything is blank.

Additional info: VLC refuses to play the sound - all silent (could be another problem, not connected to the "length" one ...)

run mp4box -info over the file and post the result here

Ok - that's what mp4box says:

totally strange. what compile of mp4box did you use?

Knuffi
30th October 2006, 20:49
The one from MeGUI:
MP4Box.exe -version
MP4Box - GPAC version 0.4.3-DEV Aug 28 2006 compiled by Kurtnoise
GPAC Copyright: (c) Jean Le Feuvre 2000-2005

Thanks ... and sorry: I deleted the file in the meanwhile. But I will try it with the same source once again tomorrow.

it might be that kurtnoise's build uses the patch from pengvado for mp4box, which seems to bork the total file duration as described here:

This one is kinda puzzling to me.. I have the same issue with some of my movies.. I used Nic's MP4Box at first, tried Celtic_Druid's and the default one that comes with meGUI, and they all made a 30m movie 2h15m long (as long as I play it in QuickTime). And only two of the four movies I muxed are like that (both of them are episodes made from the last chapters of their respective Title on the DVD).
Sound is sync'ed fine, and for some reason, these videos are reported with the correct play-time when I use Zoom Player with FFDShow (rev2546-SSE2).

EDIT: After transfering these problematic videos to my iPod I noticed there is no sound, and the playback stops after ~5 seconds and has to be restarted...

I'm keeping my source-files untill I can resolve this, so just toss me a beta and I'll give you feedback..

someone should make a bug report here:

Hi, uninstall quicktime and try again. The problem is quicktime decoder, not mp4box.

Knuffi
3rd November 2006, 10:47
I don't have quicktime installed - only "quicktime alternative".

Edit: Uninstalled Quicktim Alternative and still have the problem.

Done..

I'm testing with several source files and get different results. Sometimes I get the bug and sometimes not. The Sources are all recorded with the same programm and cut before MeGUI encodes them.

Is it possible, that the "end" of the source file is responsible? I'm used to cut them down with Mpeg2Schnitt and the end marker could be a P- or an I-frame ...

Could it be possible, that the time-bug is related to the end of the source weather beeing a P- or an I-Frame?

Knuffi

I answer my question myself: It seems to have nothing to do with it :(

Selmer79
3rd November 2006, 22:40
I had a look at mine too, and I thought I had found a cause when the audio was longer than the video (by a few ms), but that didn't stick.. Some of my bugged sources have audio that is the same length as the video too..

Knuffi

I have audio files that are shorter than the vid.

I even tried to cut away a few seconds at the end of the "huge lenght" movies with MP4Box and Yamp, but the shortened files had also the 2+ hours length ...

I tried three different builds of MP4box, and they all had the same problem, so it's a core problem in MP4box.. Just hope someone looks at it soon.. :/

Just finished re-assembling a spare-parts box and tested this again.. Same results, still broken..

I have now tested this on two AMD64 setups (single and dual-core), with and without Quicktime, with Quicktime and Quicktime Pro, all tested on Windows XP Pro..

Uhm ... I think, I have to play back the ball to MeGUI:

I just muxed another video with MP4Box via MeGUI ... the old bug happened again: 30 seconds are "blown up" to 2 hours.
BUT: I tried YAMB with the SAME files and the SAME version of MP4Box (the one from the tools folder from MeGUI) and it worked!

Could there be a bug in MeGUI accessing MP4Box? :scared: :(

Selmer79
21st November 2006, 07:44
I had the same result here.. meGUI b0rks the mux'ing, YAMB does great (using the same mp4box and sources)..
