I recently had to reinstall my system. I installed MKVToolnix and the most recent Haali Media Splitter.

For some reason my subtitles are no longer showing up in my mkv(x264) files when watching them via Theatertek. They were working perfectly before I reinstalled my system. I can select subtitles but they don't appear. Can someone tell me what I need to download and where do I install the files?

Also what version of ffdshow should I be using?

Edit: I should also add they are not working in MPC

You forgot to install vsfilter. =p

(In MPC it has to be set to VMR7/9 renderless or haali's for built-in softsubs to work.)

If I installed Haali's media splitter do I have to use his VSfilter or do I use Gabest's? Can you point me to where I can get the right one?

Thanks

vsfilter is written by gabest :)

I think something funny is going on. I know in the past I had Haali's media splitter installed and used it for subs. I'm not sure if I had vsfilter installed. Are you saying I probably did and didn't even realize it.

I went into mpc and set it to VMR9 Renderless. I was only able to get my subs but right clicking within mpc and selecting the subs BUT I also had to click on the Haali tray in the bottom right and turn on subs with it as well. I tried one or the other and it didn't work unless I did both.

Last item. Do I need vobsub at all?

Haali's pulls subs out of the stream and presents them to the player. Vsfilter (internal or external) grabs them and renders them onto the screen. So yes, you need both. MPC's internal mkv splitter works like haali's, although it doesn't have all the subtitle language priority options that I love.

External vfilter, aka vobsub, is only for when you're not using MPC, or having it output to something besides renderless.

THanks Foxy.

Just to be clear. If I am using VMR9 then I need vsfilter and Haali media splitter and if I am using Overlay then I need Haali Media Splitter and Vobsub?

vsfilter and vobsub are the same thing! Well actually, vobsub is just an older version of vsfilter. This is the rundown of your two alternatives:
o you can always use vsfilter to render subtitles. It doesn't matter what media splitter you have as long as you have one
o the alternative is to use MPC's inbuilt subtitle rendering, which has two limitations: MPC only, and a VMR renderless rendering mode only. Again, the splitter in use doesn't matter.

Boy am I having problems. Generally I don't use MPC for movies. I use Theatertek, which was working fine before my rebuild.

Okay I removed Vobsub. I have Haali Media Splitter installed, I can see that. I download vsfilter and....copy it to system32 folder? I see I have a Gabest folder in my program files folder but it's empty. When I installed Haali Media Splitter I think it asked something about disabling some GAbest splitter...Ahhhhhhhhh I don't know what to do! This is driving me nuts!

Should I uninstall Vsfilter, and Haali and start over. What sequence should I use?

I'd start over with the CCCP. Includes a correctly configured vsfilter which will Just Work (tm), and a copy of MPC too. I'd recommend you uninstall any other codecs/packs first before installing it, but that's about all there is to it :)

What's CCCP??

I don't use MPC but rather TT. It has the best pic quality for DVD's. Plus I paid for it. I did have it working perfectly previously.

Am I correct that VSfilter goes into the system32 folder?

o Read my signature link :)
o The vsfilter dll can go anywhere. If you want to manually install it, just run regsvr32 path\to\vsfilter.dll

Finally!

I have to tell you the instructions on how to get this to work are simply horrible. I'm just a regular user. But it took your comment If you want to manually install it, just run regsvr32 path\to\vsfilter.dll to get me to figure it out.

As soon as I ran regsvr32 everything now works. You woud think that something could type up in a sticky with 3 simple steps.

1. Download Haali Media Splitter
2. Download vsfilter.dll and copy to folder
3. run Regsv32 to register it in the foler it was copied.

That would have saved me over half a day of trying this and that.

Thank You.
