I found an excellent free app, StreamClip. Forget using mplex, bbtools, etc. This one creates perfectly remuxed and synched video, also demuxes and transcodes to xvid.

ps, pvastrumento, projectx don't work for me, I recently tried every combination of demux/mux and always had sync problems if it didn't crash (avi.net 2.3 crashed for me, dgindex failed to find pids once, etc).
Converting your .ts to ps mpeg2 will save some overhead, maybe 15% so it's safe to archive it.

dgindex failed to find pids once You can give back to the developers that give you all this free stuff by reporting bugs, so that the programs can be improved. Why didn't you report this DGIndex bug? And are you willing to provide a stream fragment so that I can fix it? Anyway, I strongly doubt that Raw PID Detection would "fail to find pids". I challenge you to prove me wrong. :)

Yeah, it is a good program, but it doesn't replace the apps you mentioned. Think of it as a new flavor at Ben and Jerry's:D BTW, where do you set it to transcode to xvid ?

yeah streamclip is really nice especially on Mac OS X considering the lack of a good program like DGIndex.

bad news, I can confirm this bug in dgindex 1.48. I opened a .ts file, but the screen was black and the stream menu was disabled. I tried to preview, but it said No data -check your PIDs.
Next, I tried to open the file again, found it was in the list already, so I hit OK. At this point dgindex crashes hard.
There is something different about this bug, however, as it only occurs after opening a file, which works ok, then open another file by pressing DEL then ADD then OK.
I suspect some variable may be retaining values of the previously opened video.
I've just recreated it twice by trying a few files but I don't recall the exact sequence of operations. I will have to test some more to find a repeatable sequence, but I suspect you might find it before I do.
For example, try opening a program stream which doesn't require the Stream menu, then open a .ts.. ?

I can recreate the bug everytime now. I open one .ts, it works, File->open, DEL, ADD, another .ts, OK, stream menu is disabled. File->preview, message "no data. check your pids". File->Open, OK, dgindex crashes, szHungApp.
If I open either individually, it works ok.
So, as I said perhaps something is left between files. The .ts files are both 1080i, but they may be different ac3: first is 3/2, second is 2/0, and they may be different frame rates: first is 23.976, second is 29.97.

streamclip: perhaps there is no xvid conversion. Convert to AVI seems to use quicktime technology, though there is an option of Apple mpeg4. There is also a convert to mp4 option. I take it quicktime is it's own technology and not linked into directshow.
remuxing: I can demux my streams, but muxing, using mplex I kept getting too many dropped frames, or was it buffer underflows? Another user had the same problem. the 0=automatic mux rate option didn't work but gave the fewest errors, Increasing the value manually made more errors.
I can't remember every combination I tried, but either I got an app crashing (avi.net, dgindex), or audio out of sync, or buffer underflows. Another example, projectx stopped after just a few seconds of video (demuxing this time).
After using streamclip I gave up my experimentation, it worked in every case to convert .ts to .mpg (program streams). I even tried "convert to mpeg4" and the result was great (though no anamorphic as I had hoped, when setting scale to 1.33).

Can you please provide stream fragments that will enable me to duplicate it?

so, it seems to be also related to the streams involved. Which means, I don't know how long the stream has to be to trigger it. I'll try some small cut samples first. I know there are some bad parts of one of these streams (the second one).
see what i can do.

A 23.976fps Mpeg2 Transport Stream File? Are you sure it isn't h264 ?

can you send me a debug version? I tried cutting it, but that didn't trigger the bug, the file was already too big to send around..
