I have a bunch of divx files that are encoded in 16:9 and when I play them on my DVP642 and 4:3 crt tv, they are stretched vertically (or squished horizontally) to the screen. It does this with any aspect ratio setting on the player (but I keep it on LB).

Any ideas on how to fix this problem without reencoding all of these at 4:3?

Sorry to be a "kill-joy" but this very question has been asked and answered loads of times in this section of the forum already... The ESS Vibratto II chip-set fitted within the Philips DVP6xx range of players does not support "Aspect Ratio Signalling" (ARS) detection and Philips are not interested in supporting such features...

There are loads of MediaTek, Zoran, Sigma chip-set based players that do support "Aspect Ratio Signalling" detection. And tools like MPEG4 Modifier and MP4Box that can embed such signalling within the MPEG-4 stream - without re-encoding.

What SeeMoreDigital wrote, or re-encode everything at 640x352 to show 16x9 on the DVP-642. If you have a lot of videos, you'll save a lot of grief by just getting a better player. I have a 642, and learned this lesson the hard way.

Yes... Buy yourself a player with a better specification chip-set and firmware!To be honest this was more of an impulse buy so I didn't do any research. It was 30 CAD and I couldn't resist. Typically in stores this player was originally 89.99 and went down to 69.99... where I live anyway.

I don't have a lot of videos right now since I have only made backups of a movies. But re-encoding takes so long :(

I really did look for this on the forum. I guess I just didn't use the right keywords or gave up too quickly.

640x352 looks absolutely fine on a TV connected to the player. You can use an app like AVI Recomp to quickly convert your already created Xvid/Divx AVIs. http://www.videopedia.pl/avirecomp/news.php
