I am in the process of putting together a core2duo rig. I never play games and the main purpose for the new rig is to significantly speed up my video encoding.
In order to determine the most cost effective combination of CPU (e6300, e6400, e6600) and motherboard to buy (Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3, ASUS P5W DH Deluxe, Asus P5B Deluxe) I need help from those of you who understand the relationship between CPU multiplier, FSB speed and what's most important for encoding. (Encoding is generally with DVDRebuilder, and could use any of the various encoders that may be used with DVDRB)
Each of the three C2D I am considering is stock FSB at 266. The e6400 and e6600 have higher CPU speeds only because they have multipliers of 8 and 9 respectively versus the 7 of the e6300. Whatever CPU I buy, I will overclock it substantially. Each of these CPUs can be OC'd to an FSB of 400 or more. The least expensive, the e6300, can probably go to the highest.
As far as speeding up my encoding significantly, do I stand to gain anything from going with the e6400 or the e6600?
I appreciate any help that you could provide.
Note: The new bios for the P5B allows downward unlocking of the multiplier. The rig will include 2 gigs of high quality DDR2.
