That doesn't surprise me, considering they struggled to get the PS3 released on time, and had to delay that till the Spring. What does is the up-sizing of standard DVDs to 1080p......

So the players are due to retail at $1,000 each and all they're gonna throw in is a free Blu-ray disc of "The Fifth Element"....

Wow... that's well worth the wait then (again, again, again, again)... I think I'll order three

I know it's been said many times before, but it's VHS vs Betamax all over again.

Except the quality difference is little or none (quite probably in favour of HD-DVD if they are using H.264).

Anyway, even if you got a PS3 to use as a Bluray player; at $600 it's still a little steep.

$400 would be much more inviting (250 even, but the Nintendo Wii does not have Bluray, so that's an unfair point to make); but I'm so much more leaning toward HD-DVD.

I think the general public will decide more on which format wins than their technical merits. If you ask the average person in the street they won't have a clue what Bluray is; but tell them HD-DVD and they will probably know, simply because the name DVD is already familliar with them.

Yep. HD-DVD will win due to name alone, simply because people will associate it with HDTV.

Well, I think the BD won't lose simply because the PS3 ships with a BD drive (for half the price of the SA BD player). View the success that the previous playstations had (and still have), I'm pretty sure the PS3, along with the BD format, will have a great success. And I think, it will once again sell more than the Xbox, so at least in the console market, the BD will most probably have the upper hand.

On the PC side of things, users will most probably be attracted to the higher capacity of BDs. I don't understand Zero1 for the matter, H.264 is part of the BD specs.

Same goes for video- and audiophiles, the BD offers higher bitrates than HD-DVD, so I think they will blindly go to the BD clan.

For the others, it will be a matter of marketing. The HD-DVD will sure have it easier because of its name. The price will also have a big influence. I also heard that HD-DVD can have a regular DVD face, so that they can be played on regular DVD players, which is an undeniable advantage.

Well, as a PS2 owner, I think I already choosed my clan :D
I'm not interested in HD right now anyway, none of my computers can play HD content, I still have a regular TV, and I'm very happy with the quality DVD has to offer.

See you in 2 or 3 years, when the PS3 becomes cheaper :D
