Undersize Issue

I'm on DVD Rebuilder Pro. Through the different upgrades from DVD Rebuilder free to the latest in Pro I've never changed a setting, because I only do movies that requiere a reduction of 30, 40 top %. Till version 1.10.4/5 (don't remember) I always got a perfect size 4.33 or 4,34 GB. Now I almost always get a size of 4.25 GB. Repeat, haven't changed a setting. Leave it through the night, 6 passes, one-click mode, output to ISO image and close computer once done.

TIA if you could five me advise to get the perfect size again :)

Did you upgrade your versions of encoder ??? HC ??

What version of DVD-RB are you using? Also, are you dong full disc, movie-only, or "Movie and Menus" mode?

Normally you should get 4.32 to 4.33GB as the output size. If you could post your REBUILDER.INI file I could help you better.

The version was 1.10.9 (I mean was, because I've changed to 1.10.4 and I'll repeat the process tonight.

It was a full back up. But one note about this. I repeat that I never have changed the settings and since the beginning (some years back, when I used the free version) I've ripped first the movie, leaving only movie and languages.

Nothing unusual there. I wouldn't recommend using v1.10.4. That version was only out for one day because of a bug that was introduced.

It's possible that you may have run into a couple of odd discs. Undersizing is possible if the bitrate/reduction results in any encoder saturation. It's also more likely when you are backing up a disc that has a lot of VTSs. That's mainly because there isn't a lot of segments in each to "balance out" any encoder output inconsistencies.

Are you sure you're using v1.10.9? What you might be seeing is the effect of removed unreferenced material. That was introduced in v1.10.4. It only happens on certain discs.

Change log for v1.10.8:

- Corrected code so that space related to unreferenced cells
that have been removed is returned to video. This could
have caused undersizing when backing up certain dics.

Yesterday I downgraded to v1.10.3 and redid the same movie. I got the same size: 4,25 GB. It baffles me.

And just now, after upgrading again to v1.10.9, I did (but only 3 passes) the japanese movie Shinobi (though I have to say that I added to it custom subs). The movie was 5,74 GB and the ISO I got is 3,9 GB.

I'm really disconcerted. Tonight I'm gonna do MI:III. Wish me luck :)

If you're doing a movie that is only 5.74GB to begin with -- there is a good chance that the CCE will saturate. You can tell by watching the Quantizer values during encoding -- they will be very low (under 5).

I think (but I cannot be sure) that in the past I did movies of this size, without these results. I've just seen that MI:III, already ripped, only the movie with two languages and two subs, is just 5,62GB. So I should expect a similar result?

Well... you tried it with v1.10.3 and it undersized there as well. I can say I've done somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 discs since v1.10.4 was released -- and with the exception of one (that I purchased specially to find the "unreferenced cell" error) they have all been between 4.32 and 4.33GB.

I've read this thread thru a couple of times. I have nothing to show it, but I've noticed that the last 4-5 iso's I have made have been sized at 4.25 GB. I'm using DVDRB ver 1.10.9, making full copies of menu, extras and movie. Since I have nothing to show the sizes, I'll take note of the next few iso's I make and post back. Just wanted to show that others seem to have same problem. When I get home I'll install new version and run a test disc and see if I get the same thing. Thanks.

Well it should be 4.32GB... and it is consistently on all my tests. But even if it was giving you 4.25GB, you're talking about a deviation in output size of .015. That, at least to me, isn't that big a deal.

But, of course, I'll keep testing.

Are you modifying the default TargetSectors sizes?

almost the same Problem here.

I always get a size of 3,35GB instead of 4,35 GB(Menus and Movies only).

I have tried to enter TargetSectors=2236400 in the rebuilder.ini (that is also the default without entering it in the rebuilder.ini file).

I tried some versions 1.10.06, 1.10.09

Last time I used DVDRebuilder i used 1.04 Pro and there it worked.

It's very possible when using "Movie Only" or "Movie and Menus" only that the original disc size is only 3.35GB. DVD Rebuilder won't make it bigger than the original just to fill out space. The reason you may have gotten a larger one in an earlier version is probably because the unreferenced sectors were not removed in that one.

Since you're saying you "always get it" -- please send me the REBUILDER.INI, REBUILDER.INF, and REBUILDER.LOG files (to dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com ) and I can look at it.

I just wanted to add to my post above, that after reading jdobbs post about movie only or movie and menus, I realized that I was mistaken--I rebuilded one movie and menus only and it was 4.25. Since that, I have rebuilded at least 3 others and they have all been consistently 4.32-4.35-ish. What can I say? I was at work and bored and must have thought differently.:confused: His explanation completely makes sense. my bad!
