Hi,

I didn't use DVD-RB for some time, and now I used it again and I randomly get the following error message:

Run-time Error '70':
Permission denied

When I restart DVD-RB and resume the encoding, it continues without an error for some time and then the error occures again. It happens with one and two encoding instances.

That means that some file or directory that DVD-RB is trying to access has been write protected. It could be because the "Read Only" flag has been set, or because it is currently in use by another program.

That's odd because I didn't change anything while encoding and I think no program accesses the files. I'll try it with a different source and a different encoder, perhaps it'll change anything. I'll report here if I can narrow it down to something specific.

Try clearing the working and output directories.

I cleared the directories, but it did not change anything.

But I changed the encoder from HC019 back to HC018 and I got the following error again instead of the DVD-RB error:

As Hank wrote there he wanted to change something about this and I don't get this error with HC019 anymore. But therefore DVD-RB crashes.

Are you using any kind of non typical drive? Is it network attached, USB, or Firewire?

This is really strange. If it were the same issue you'd think it would be HC kicking out a message, not DVD-RB...

I know it's curious, I don't know what it is either.

It's a normal ATA HDD. I don't know if the errors cause is the same, but with HC018 I get the one error and not the other, and vice versa with HC019.

I searched my system for a virus or a rootkit but did not find anything. I'm totally clueless what's causing it.

You're not using Kaspersky, by chance, are you? I've had reports that its active scanning can cause disc I/O problems.

IIRC it's caused because the database HC.dbs can't be deleted at once.
I changed this in HC019 and check if it's still there, if so it tries to delete it again and again...
If it's not gone after 5 sec. HC019 gives up and continues.

The reason I asked about Kaspersky is because that scenario seems to be happening when it is installed. For some reason you can ask the operating system to close a file, and get an "ok" return from the call -- but it will still show as locked if you try to delete or open it again for output a few lines of code later.

You're right, I use AOL Active Virus Shield, that's a free version of Kaspersky. On the latest c't here in Germany was a licence for NOD 32, I'll try that scanner and see if it can satisfy me (and if the problem is gone ;) ).

I have to believe that Kaspersky problem will rear its head with lots of other software too. When a program closes a file -- it expects it to be closed -- not dicked around with by some invisible AV software that doesn't release it for a while.

The real problem is that it makes the errors appear to be within the software... when it isn't.

Pathetic.

You seem to be right, with another virus software, the error is gone.

Thank you
