I have a HDTV version of Matrix - Revolutions and i want to encode it to AVC with X264 and resize to 720p. Well the thing is that this HD version is at some scenes extremely blocky and i'm not sure why. So i was wondering if anybody can suggest which AVISynth deblocking filter should i use for encoding and if i should use decimate() for this movie. Also if somebody can figure out why is this thing so blocky at some scenes. The blockiness happens only at scenes with bright light and it's not there at shots with no movement.I have uploaded a short 10s clip where the blockiness is most evident and a snapshot. The links are below.

The blocks are most likely occuring because the mpeg encoder can't handle the intricate details and luma fluctuations in the rain scene. There are certain things that mpeg encoders struggle with - water, smoke, clouds, fog, and light flashes. Pretty common problem, even in the HD world. There should have been more bitrate allocated to that scene, but the movie was probably encoded via hardware in realtime for broadcast.

Question for the experts - need help! Please use a proper thread title, per forum rule 9. Thank you. (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm)
As Pookie says, some scenes need bitrate spikes, but in a broadcast environment, muxing more channels often takes precedence over providing ample bitrate for existing channels.

Ok thanks for the answers, but what's the preffered way to get rid of these blocks. I know that they will never be completely gone, but will the downsizing to 720p help and which deblocker should i use?

You can try the internal deblocking of mpeg2source().

The ending scene is horrible, I think it would be "good" to just upconvert the dvd and mux with the .ts. Only the parts with horrible blocking. It may be a ton of work but would be worth it in the end. I dont think there is a deblocker out there that could fix the matrix revolutions ending.

Not a bad idea, mrkazador. Using CPU=4 in Mpeg2source will actually remove most of the blocks - but you'll still have artifacts galore. Maybe you could try that with FFT3dfilter and low sigma to see if it will help. Another possibility is to add some grain after deblocking to hide the artifacts. There are tons of other deblockers on this site for you to try. Finally, if this is your favorite movie, look at Fizick's motion compensated deblockers and denoisers.

Thanks guys, that's what i thought, to upconvert the dvd which i have and to replace the audio because on my dvd it's 5.1 and on this ts it's only 2.0. Is there any easier way to insert upconverted frames, then to just split in few parts, encode and then join all together?

Load multiple sources (DVD and TS) in your AviSynth script, split into clips as necessary, filter, conform everything's resolution and chain together an ouput stream to feed x264.exe.
Should work well... Sounds like a fun project too!
Someday there will be enough transponder bandwidth on DSS for decent HD... Someday...
