Can you really count things that aren't being developed? Some of their CVS's haven't changed in quite some time. One is basline only in pure C.

It would be odd to put things that are crippleware other than the JM Reference encoder.

hdot264 seems to be not developped anymore indeed but by *definition* an open-source project is not dead... :)

Open-source projects can be just as dead as anything else. They just have more of a chance to get resurrected later, if and only if someone is sufficiently interested.

hdot264 is not only not developed anymore, it's... a vfw frontend for jm and xvid?

afaict, dm-qcif hasn't released any source code, despite being gpl'ed. And it's baseline and C only.

t264 is a fork of some early version of x264, and hasn't been updated in 16 months.

I knew those projects. The fact is they're pretty dead and incomplete (JM apart).
The JM reference encoder is just what the name says... a reference encoder. It's so slow it's not good for everyday encoding.

btw, I suppose that you won't mention the FFmpeg h.264 compressor also even if it's only available via the ML...

If it's not updated or easily accessible even for lazy windows users i wont mention it... otherwise my mailbox will get instantly filled with questions...

EDIT: Reworded Q22. It now looks like this:

A: Yes and no. There are other OSS h.264 encoders but their development is discontinued or incomplete. However the Xvid dev team is working on Xvid AVC but they didn't release any code yet.

If it was going to be OSS, source code would have been released when they said it would. That was 8 months ago. Anyway, all that is pure supposition, since, as you said, there were no official statements. Which, incidentally, tends to confirm my point...
