i've installed x.264.but i can't use vdubmod to open the video.
what can i do?

Uhhh, if you want to able to open x264 encoded video in and AVI file using vdubmod, then you will want to install ffdshow, enabling H.264 in the decoding part of the VFW filter configuration.

It's x264 not x.264.

Just to clarify some things up (it seems like you aren't sure about what you're asking for) :

- x264 is only an encoder (which produces h264 compliant video)
- virtualdub uses vfw to decode opened videos, and the only vfw h264 decoding solution I know of is indeed ffdshow's vfw helper (which is able to decode h264 as well as many other formats).
- ffdshow also provides a directshow interface for decoding h264 and many other formats (useful for windows media player or media player classic -or any other directshow-based media player)

However, would you mind being more precise please ? ;)

what can i do?you cant open .mp4 or native .mkv files with x264 with virtualdubmod. use avidemux instead in this case

avidemux can open MKV files??

libavformat can though so I guess mkv support will be added at a later stage.

there's some mkv support in 2.3, doesn't work too well yet
