Why is WMV9 colour so washed out?

My input is avi in Huffyuv. Using Windows Media Encoder, and by looking at the video panel, I can definately tell that the output has much more washed-out colour.

However, if I use RV10, the colour of the input & output is exactly the same.

Any idea? I tried searching this forum already, but with no success.

I'm using nVidia 6600 with latest WHQL'ed driver.

they may implement some kind of level/limiter like filters in WME

Most likely the wrong level mapping is occuring in the decoding pipeline, not WME or WMV9. I've seen the problem you're referring to, but I've also seen WME/WMV9 encode correctly luma and color levels - so it's not necessarily a problem intrinsic to WME app or WMV9 codec. Try decoding the HFYU video to uncompressed first, and then feed that to WME9 and see if the problem repros. Which decoder are you using to decode HFYU anyway? Huffyuv, Ffdshow, or something else?

nVidia's fault.
