You can try the new beta of DivX Codec 6.4 here:
http://labs.divx.com/node/248

I'll check this thread for feedback, and you can also e-mail me at amayo (at) divxcorp {dot} com , but please follow the bug reporting guidelines listed in the DivX Labs article when doing so ;)

In another post on the forum you mention the following with regard to "interlaced" encoding and decoding: -

"Encoding and playback should work within VirtualDub (i.e. with the VFW codec). We'll be fixing the DirectShow decoder shortly."

Does this mean your proposed decoder will offer interlaced support for 480i and 576i MPEG-4 encoded sources and not just 1080i encoded sources?

Cheers

What is the difference?

We found that interlaced source material required some adjustments in our color transforms to avoid certain chroma issues. One of the posts on the forum illustrated a problem where the chroma was occasionally displaced where motion was present. The 6.4 codec should fix this problem. The decoder should play interlaced material at any resolution, although it is not permitted when encoding in certain DivX Certified profiles.

We do not yet de-interlace automatically on playback, if this is what you were asking, although I think that would be a nice feature to add later ;)

From 6.2.5 to 6.4. There wasn't 6.3 version of encoder. Even 6.2.5 is mostly previous 6.2.x because 6.2.5 has only improved decoder not encoder.
6.5 may be will come with outstanding gui but all Divx 6.x encoders have more or less the same quality. Even to compare to 5.x versions.

Version jumping without resonable improvements.

Version jumping without resonable improvements.

Not really. Since 6.0 we've multithreaded the encoder and decoder to make them much faster on modern processors, added new encoding modes and improved the performance of others, made fastest mode quality much higher, added target quantizer encoding to profile mode encoding, added new cpu optimizations, lanczos resize, MPEG quant, multithreaded resize filters, enhanced multithreading performance, added texture enhancement, added sharpening to the decoder, released the community codec, added 1080 mode, fast 1st pass, improved the quality of the resize, added adaptive noise reduction, and included many fixes along the way.

Okay, so we skipped 6.3 for codec, but this is partly to address a problem where DivX Player 6.3 was released some time ago ahead of a codec update, and people were confused because the codec version number didn't go up yet the perceived "bundle number" did. There was even a thread here on the forums:

The installer for Beta 1 has been updated to fix a problem where the codec did not load correctly on some systems.

Has anyone any feedback relating to the stability, performance, or quality of this beta?

I just downloaded beta 1. I will post my opinion tomorrow.

Ok i'll give it a go.

I use divx though veedub to compress about 6 mpegs a day. My two computers, 3ghz cpu each, are busy doing 1st and nth passes all day every day.

the new lanczos4(fast) is significantly faster than lanczos, just encoding some small clips now using both so that i can compare quality.

Actually, "Lanzcos4 (fast)" is the old mode. "Lanzcos4" is new and should attain the same quality at lower bitrate.

Thanks for testing!

Mostly because i had never used any of these setting before but I tried all the different resize filters and the auto noise reduction. I tried the 1080HD. I tried some cropping and I tried the 1 pass quality based with quantizers of 1 – 4. Also the fast first pass and the preserve interlace settings. Every thing worked fine, no problems.

what this codec do?

can i encode at 1080 and play the movie on a 480 tv?
so i will not have to reencode when i will get a HD TV.

Due to all of the of the codec changes and additional resize filters I am no longer sure which one will produce the best quality output videos. Which filter will result in the best quality files and which filter should be used when all you care about is speed?

Use Bilinear for absolute speed and Lanczos4 for sharp video. Within that, Lanczos4 is slower but more efficient than Lanczos4 (fast).

interesting, the new mode (lanczos NOT fast) is considerably slower and the quility difference although noticable is not that great. I need to try some different sources before i make an educated preferance of which filter id best for my needs.

Currently im resizing from 1080 to 720 (which is what most of my divx is anyway) so any difference in speed is noticable when dealing with so many pixels.

Im going to try with some lower bitrate sources, maybe this may help highlight the quality differences between the 2 lanczos?

A question about 2 pass,

Using the new 1st pass fast blanks out psychvisual, but am i correct in thinking this option needs to be the same for both passes? so how does the codec know which psychvisual mode i need for the 2nd pass?

figured it would have made more sense to blank out noise reduction for the first pass!

Thanks for your quick response I will try to remember that!:goodpost:

thx.

DigitAl56K - The new codec has a 1080HD profile, but with 6.2.5 you can encode 1920x1080 anway. So what is new?

Also can you encode higher than 1920x1080 with the new version? I want to encode video at 2560x1600.

The latest version (6.4) have problems with DMF and MPC? Only the DMF menu is working OK.

In DivX player, the DMF played well.

Still no 'decoder only' package? Meanwhile even DivXPlay has vanished...
