xvid vs. RMVB ?

Lately xvid didnt give me satisfying results as I
was so enthausistic about like before.
I really find rmvb a real cool codec giving similar results as xvid video that is twice as big. And with no artifacts that my xvid codecs suffer from.

My question is:
If I make those rmvb files the same size as a xvid counterpart
encoded from the same video source.
Will this rmvb be of higher quality to the eye than the xvid version?

I dunno if had to pace this in rmvb or here.
Ill probably get flamed here.. :)

No. Re-encoding will only lower the quality.

Or does RMVB re-encode video during encoding?

I don't know about you, but I like XviD better than RealVideo. But if RealVideo looks better to you, more power to you, man. Use it and be done with it. Why are you asking us to think and judge for you? It totally depends on your needs and purposes.

You need to learn what kind of questions would elicit proper answers here.

To be fair XviD is a video codec and rmvb is a container. You can't compare the two. You can compare RV9EHQ though and that really comes down to which you prefer. Sure RV doesn't artifact in the same way as XviD, but it does blur details.

Just add prefiltering (maybe good heavy denoiser as fff) to Xvid via avs and you will get smooth/blur/non artefacts/non details RV10 content.

Hum.. the fact that RV10 is "better"(not for me) than XviD, that's old news. ;)

But things are even better: RV10(and VP7) is a bilion of galaxies away behind from x264's output quality! :cool: :)

Give a try to RV10 and x264, and decide wich is better for you. ^_^

yeah to me RV10 drops too much detail compared to a nice tuned high quality XviD rip, even at equivalent bitrates..

It seems to me that the whole RV platform was initially built around streaming and web delivery, which is contrary to say DVD backup. Perhaps the latest tunings and iterations of their codecs are free from this mentality, but I've never personally liked it for real footage.

Holy crap it's good for toons though! I just dont like the encoder.

Yeah I must agree now that RV is useable but looses too much detail.
Although I pretty much like the way RV handles dark areas, better than xvid. dunno why.
And yes Im going to give h264 a try. Its awesome by the looks of some h264 encodes ive seen. feetfeew!

in my test,this better for me:
under 250k asf [120x90-320x240]
250-550k rmvb [320x240-640x360]
550-750k wmv [480x270-512x384]
750k-2m avi(xvid) [512x384-1024x768(or16:9)]
upwards 2m avi (H264) or HDwmv(wmv9&wmap) [hdtv]

asf is a container, not a codec.

x264(H.264 High Profile) all the time, that's what my tests say.
And that's what the H.264 standard is for: everything. ;)
