I am unable to find any AVC option in my Nero Recode. I tried reinstalling etc but to no avail. I am using version 2.2.6.17...

My pulldown merely shows this:

See there, down to the left, "Nero Recode 2 Default Profile". Change it to Nero AVC profile, and you'll have ND profiles for AVC to the right.

moivre now, i've had this problem too, and several times.
I indeed uninstalled and re-installed everything and it worked out fine.
One side question : are you volontarily using that version or did you download what you thought was the latest version ? Nero Recode's latest version doesn't show the profiles that way, this is why I ask :) (and believe me, you don't want to be using the latest version right now :D)
@moivre: in fact I've only ever had "Nero Recode 2 default profile" in that dropdown box, the AVC profiles were all together with the ASP profiles.

I only see 'Default Profile' and nothing else...

umm nero 6 won't ever have AVC support.......you need to upgrade to 7.

"Nero Recode 2 default profile" is an import profile for DVD titles. It has nothing to do with Nero Digital profiles.

I beg to differ! My first AVC encodes before I moved to the MeGUI/x264 implementation was using Recode in the Nero 6 series. A selection of AVC profiles should be listed in the right-hand "Nero Digital Profile" pull down.
Nero 6 didn't have the High Profile capabilities that v7 has now included (*bugs aside), but it indeed could do AVC....
