I Replaced The Original Cd Burner (nec) That Came With My Computer With A New Sony Dvd-rw 820a Dl. I Also Have In The Second Bay A Sony Dvd-rw 510-a. The 820 Will Not Work Unless I Set The Dma To Pio Mode Only. Of Course This Sucks For Obvious Reasons. The 820 Is Set To Master, The 510 Is Set To Slave. Any Suggestions To Fix This Problem. Maybe Switch The Two Master And Slave? Any Suggestions Would Help. THE ERROR MESSAGE IS AN I/O ERROR. all firmware is up to date. running xp

Sorry, But Its Very Frustrating When You Buy A New Piece Of Hardware And It Doesn't Work Like It Should.

Ditch the 510 and run the new drive on it's own as a master.

Make sure you're using an 80 wire ide cable and that the drive is physically connected to the last connector.

Then do the normal thing of deleting the ide controller in device manager and rebooting to finally fix the DMA stuff.

Thanks, I'll Give It A Try. I Hate To Get Rid Of The 510 Since Its The Only Drive Thats Working At The Moment. I'll Keep You Posted. You Guys Are The Best.

Is It Possible You Can Give Me The Steps Involved? I Have Two Hard Drives (120 & 40) And Right Now Two Dvd Drives.

In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

I Had My I.t. Friend Take A Look At My Situation And He Said There Is A Conflict With The Dma Settings Between The Two Drives. Its Been A Long Time Since He Worked With Dos But He Is Going To Find Out For Me How To Change The Settings With The Dma Or The Irq. If That Doesnt Work, I'm Going To Ditch The Drive. Maybe Since They Are Both Sony That There Is A Conflict

Not Yet. I Should Have Said " As A Last Resort If Nothing Else Works". My Mistake. I Thank You All For Your Time And Effort.

The procedure I described for you is anything but a "last resort". It is a frequently used remedy for PIO to DMA reset issues - but, to each his/her own...
