I've recently updated my hobby site to include a
Perl script (for Linux/BSDs) that uses common open source
tools to transcode a VOB file to a Matroska MKV with
either XVID or X264. It works really well for me,
so I thought I'd go public with it.
The site also includes a mini-tutorial of doing the work
manually.

Enjoy!
