99.9% of software and hardware players can "automatically" detect "aspect ratio signalling" (ARS) embedded within the MPEG-2 video stream...
Does your stream possess possess "aspect ratio signalling"?

As Bigotti5 said, make sure your player knows it is connected to a widescreen tv. Also check for widescreen signalling capabilities of both the player and tv, both need to support wss for the tv to be told which aspect ratio the player is sending it. Without wss you have to change the tv's display options, players do not add black to the sides for display on widescreen tv's.
