Ive got the option of either of these CPUs, i can afford the Core 2 but i didnt wanna spend all the cash on one.

I know the merits of the Core 2 and that its a hell of a lot faster than the Pentium D but i was wondering how much of a difference would the Core 2 make over Pentium D when encoding H.264.

A lot.

At encoding media, the Core 2 wipes the floor with the Athlon 64 x2, which subsequently wipes the floor with the Pentium D.

The Core 2 Duo is very cheap, especially the lower end models, which will still be faster than almost any P4 you can get your hands on. Is $180 really too much to ask for an E6300?

The Pentium D is a really poor design.

Get a core 2, i did and it is worth it. Plus you can do a modest overclock no problem and put any x2 to shame, something that seemed imposible not to long ago.

The core 2 is a lot quicker and worth the extra price.
