FYI - Hackers fire up anonymous Torpark browser

An international group of computer security experts and human rights workers has released an anonymous, fully portable web browser based on Mozilla Firefox.

The Torpark browser comes pre-configured and requires no installation. It runs off a USB memory stick, and claims to leave no tracks behind on the browser or computer.

Hacktivismo, the organisation behind the project, said that Torpark is a highly modified variant of Portable Firefox that uses The Onion Router (Tor) network to create an anonymous connection between the user and the websites being visited.

By default, Torpark uses the Tor network, which is typically slower than a broadband connection...

Just tried it yesterday. First impressions:

- It's based on the firefox 1.5.0.7 so no big changes for firefox users
- It can switch from TOR network to normal Web
- A few extensions are included
- It is 9.5 Mb for download, autoextractable and the folder is +- 26Mb; no win install so it can be portable on any USB Key

It is slow, I have a 128kb/s ADSL and it reacts like if speed was divided by 2/3 with a lot of timeouts ! :mad:
I suppose it will be +- acceptable for people having a fast ADSL connection. :rolleyes:

It's actually not based on your bandwidth at all. It's based on the bandwidth of the hosts you connect to, and the hosts they connect to, and so on down the line. Since the vast majority is p2p, connecting serially to several peers around the world, the "backbone" is slow, very high latency, and prone to timeouts. It's designed to be used for high-risk activities, not everyday browsing and downloading. That's the price for true anonymity.

tor is a really good idea, works well, if your upset about the speed simple act as a node to relay traffic, the more that do the faster it will be.

it would be nice if they could make everyone act as a relay then query hosts to get a routing table which would update with clients... i dunno if im talknig sense ... i might look in to it more :D

Torpark is now XeroBank Browser and still based on Firefox Portable...

Regarding the browser itself, we cleaned it up for vista, and improved some of the structure. Soon it will be getting a much stronger overhaul. We updated everything in it, as per usual, Firefox/Geckos core, plugins, new plugins, tor, etc.
