My current dvd player doesn't support QPEL or GMC. I'm looking at a new one that supports Xvid Qpel and Divx GMC. What are the advantages or quality differences implementing these modes in the encodes vs. not? In advance, thanks

Qpel has quality advantages over half-pel. GMC doesn't have any advantages at all. Well, very very little, in fact.

Honestly ... nothing really tremendous :)
It's not worth the money your going to put into it, but it might save you the re-encoding of QPEL-ed or GMC-ed sources to nonQPEL and nonGMC.

DVD Player with 3 point gmc? I don't know any ... qpel is no problem. For example most mtk based players support it.

btw: DivX' gmc has 3 warppoints at all?

No, DivX have only one warppoint, Xvid have three.

Definately dont waste your money, unless you've got a lot of XviD encodes with qpel. I did a lot of encodes with GMC back in the day thinking they would be better.

Re-encoding MPEG-4 is ugly.

QPEL has definatly a nice "sharpening" effect but requires the adequate bitrate.
Something definately not worth enabling for low bitrate encodings or if you watch your encoded movies on a standard CRT TV...

Thanks for the reply. I currently own the Philips 642/37. Currently Philips 5140/37 is a better player and am considering this one. The chipset's better in the 5140 and it supposedly displays true resolutions.

All of my Xvid encodes are non-QPEL/GMC and wonder if the 5140 will display them with better quality over the 642/37. This is the major reason for upgrading.

I'm somewhat lost selecting the bitrate for encodes and have resorted to CQ=2 or 2.5? Do you have a method for chosing bitrates?

I currently own the Philips 642/37 player and am considering the Philips 5140 (maybe higher) unit. It has the MTK1389 chip vs the Esso Vibratto II. My only dislike it that the 5140 does not support S-Video Out or Digital Optical. My TV's not component so my only option is Composite. Is there a significant difference: S-Video vs. Composite. I have a 27" flat screen supporting S-video. Thanks

S-video is definitely much better than composite, the most obvious difference is how much less crosstalk (rainbowing and dot crawl) there is. If you can get a component-to-SVHS converter cheap I'd go for it. (Or a digital coax-to-SVHS, but those are pricey.) It also depends on how far back you sit, and whether you can currently distinguish SVHS from composite or coaxial. LCDs and plasma tend to show the difference much more than CRTs.

The 5410 is great though, it's what I'd get if I wasn't holding out for an AVC player. I don't know what you're looking at for higher quality though - pretty sure it doesn't have any built-in deblocking, although it can certainly play a much wider range of encodes.

Hi,

As reported by Foxyshadis it depends on the TV: LCD (yes) CRT (no, exception with few new models). An informative thread on the 5140: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=111431

I don't own a 5140 but have a player with a MTK 1389. I don't use QPEL nor GMC for compatibility reasons but I use and abuse of custom CQM (matrixes) specially from Sharktooth see: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83125

Also the max-continuous bitrate allowed by SAP is a problem, whatever the brand. The XVID builds made by Celtic-Druid have 2 PAL( PAL & PAL 6000) and 2 NTSC (NTSC & NTSC 6000) MTK special profiles. Using the regular (4000 kbp/s) is safe whatever the MTK SAP. Some MTK SAP allows bitrate up to 6000 max-continuous without stuttering. Up to you to test.
