View Full Version : Having trouble with three movies

All three are older B/W movies

Ikiru, the picture in the last chapter jerks along every five seconds or so

The Virgin Spring, the sound-track is playing a couple of seconds earlier then the movie right from the start and is jerky.

The Third Man, Is jerky and the sound is out of sync really bad from the get go.

All three movies are done full rebuild and movie only and no pre-processing and on both, movie only and full rebuild exhibit the same exact problem.

Thanks

Does it play well on your computer? or it is jerky on the computer and on your DVD player.
did you burn it? or tested it straight from the file created by DVDRB?
Did you made it as an ISO file or VIDEO_TS folder?

10x Elad.

The original DVD plays well on my stand alone players and the burned DVD's play on my computer well. But the three movies after being burned from the DVDRB Video_TS folder all play bad on all four of my stand alone DVD players.

Thanks

Need more information:

1. What encoder? What version?
2. What version of DVD-RB?
3. What software did you use to rip it?
4. Did you modify the DVD-RB output at all? Change bitrates or maximums?
5. Posting your INI file might also help spot problems.
6. What did you use to burn it (software and hardware)?

The fact that your computer can play them but your standalones can't makes your burner seem suspect.

I'm using ProCoder 2 to encode
I have the latest DVDRB Pro Version, I donated money but probably need to again, it's been awhile.
I use DVD Decrypter
I did not do any changes at all to the whole DVD or Movie only option's
I use ONES to burn and I use three fifferent burners, Pioneer-109, LG-4163B and a NEC-3500

I have backed up a lot of movies and only these three so far have given me problems, I've used the last three or four versions of DVDRB Pro with the same results.

I did notice that all three movies are B/W Criterion movies.

I have to go to my other hard drive to get the ini file.

Hi!the burned DVD's play on my computer well. But the three movies after being burned from the DVDRB Video_TS folder all play bad on all four of my stand alone DVD players. You might try burning your DVDs at a lower rate. If possible, try using high quality media, such as T-Y or Verbatim...

I'd be posting a burn log rather than a Rebuilder INI - given as was said it plays ok in a software player.

Read and implement the Golden Rules of Burning (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49635).

As well, you might wanna clean the laser on your standalone.

Glad to hear you're using high quality T-Ys. However, as I mentioned, you might try burning your DVDs at a lower rate...

I'll trying burning a movie at 4x and see what happens.

I have five stand alone players, the newest one is only a couple of weeks old and they all have trouble with these three movies.

The thing that made me suspect the drive is the lack of audio sync when you try to play them on the standalones. Since the audio is played based upon the PTS embedded in the audio stream it seems odd that it could play in sync on one device but not on another... that makes one think there may be errors on the disc that you don't see when you play it back on the same drive as it was burned.

Just a shot in the dark.

Are these NTSC, R1? If so, tell me which one is the worst and I'll pick it up for testing.

I just burned at 4x and the audio is still out of sink and the beginning of the movie jerky. This is for "The Virgin Spring"

I've attached two files

Yes these are all NTSC, R1.

The worst was "The Third Man"

All three are Criterion releases in B/W

Thanks

I ordered "The Virgin Spring" earlier today and should have it in a day or two. I'll report back after I run it.

I ran my copy of the criterion release of the 3rd Man (r1) some months ago, and rb's output was flawless (I just rewatched my copy a few weeks ago). I couldn't tell you what version of rb I was using at the time, but I can tell you that as with all my copies, I encoded with cce, no pre-processing, 1/2 + 1/2, & KISS on the extras.

I wonder if ProCoder is doing something wrong?
When I update DVDRB I always just use what's in the zip file to update DVDRB, I haven't used the DVDRB exe. update in ages.
I wonder if it would make a difference if I used the DVDRB exe. to update?

did you try other Black & white movies that were good on your DVD Player?, when was the last backup you did with DVDRB that was good, see if you can remember. Maybi you installed / uninstalled something that medded up things.
further more, do you know DVDinfoPro (http://www.dvd-recordable.org/wwwimgs/media/flash/dvdinfopro/index.htm)software?
Try to make with it a Pie Pif error quality tests to your burned DVD's, I wonder if the burn had errors in it and how many.

TatanScorp
23rd September 2006, 16:30
I test every movie I burn and if it doesn't meet these criteria I do them over:

PIE < 120
PIF < 16
Jitter < 12%
POF = 0
QS: 90+%

Out of the multitude of movies I did with DVDRB only those three movies besides " The Patriot " gave me problems.

Would the setting in ProCoder "AlwaysGOP15=ON" have anything to do with my problem?

That's more than possible with an NTSC disc. You have to remember that RB is doing all encodes at 23.976 fps. During Rebuild, when the frame rate is restored to 29.70, that could very easily give you a GOP length of over 18(NTSC max) in certain circumstances.
I would definately try the same disc without that setting and see if the problem goes away.

I used HC on all the discs you mentioned and had no problem.

Sorry I use CCE 2.70.02.06 So I don't know about ProCoder.

Update: My copy of "Virgin Spring, the Criterion Collection", NTSC, R1 was delivered yesterday (Ingmar Bergman is really an artist, isn't he?) Anyway, I ran it overnight using CCE as the encoder and it came out perfectly. I'm running it with Procoder now to see if it changes anything.

jdobbs

Well the ProCoder encode just finished and I tested it. It works perfectly also... not sure what I can do -- as the problem doesn't seem to be repeatable.

Can you tell me what settings you have in your ECL ini file?

Did you know that there is an loose American version of the Virgin Spring?

It's called "Last House On The Left"
Go figure.

jdobbs
26th September 2006, 22:05
Sorry I deleted the ECL. I'll do another PREPARE and post it. Give me a couple of hours -- I have a job going on my video computer.

Go figure.Haha.. I've heard of "Last House On the Left" but have never watched it. Amazing, isn't it? Did you know there was a remake of "Casablanca" that starred David Soul (from Starsky and Hutch)?

TatanScorp

I didn't know there was a remake of "Casablanca" with David Soul.

But back to some good news, I changed "AlwaysGOP15=1" in my EclPro ini file to "AlwaysGOP15=0" and now the rebuild is perfectly in sync and no jerking.

Wow. I never would have guessed that would make a difference. I'll make sure I put that one down for future reference.
