A couple of days ago I bought the Philips DVP5140/37 and found out that it doesnt support the 1251 cyrillic encoding in the plain text subtitles for the DivX movies. Unfortunately since then I wasn't able to find a firmware upgrade for this particular model. The European version does have upgrade though, and it supports cyrillic characters. I tried to apply this upgrade to my player and i renamed the firmware file from DVP5140_12.BIN to DVP5140_37.BIN because the player would not recognise it otherwise. Unfortunately the upgrade is not working on the American version of the player. It became unusable (no sound, no picture). The good thing was that I got it from walmart and returned it without hassle.

My question is. Does anyone know if there is a firmware upgrade for the AMERICAN version DVP5140/37 to support cyrillic characters in the .sub/.srt subtitle files?

Thanx.

P.S.: Please don't offer me DVP642 :) I alredy have it, but it doesn't support QPEL and a lot of other stuff.

thanx for the quick response :) Really appreciate it but I there is only user manuals and photos of the unit. I already checked the user manual and for DivX subtitle there's no other option than standard. No cyr support :(

That is the page where the firmware will be put, so put a tracker on it so you'll get e-mailed as soon as the page changes :)

But yes, I'm in roughly the same situation. I've sent Philips loads of e-mails about the subtitle support but only got one response back "we will forward this to the product department". Nothing's happened since, and from what I know, Philips doesn't maintain a public forum for these matters.

Send some mails you too and perhaps they'll get better ;)

If Philips will not upload the firmware for your player and you want at least better subtitles, somebody must to copy the firmware from the player.
How to extract a firmware from a MTK player. (http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=2)
In the forum from softpedia somebody asked for the 37 version for this player, but at this moment nobody extracted it.

enjoy,

Update notes don't mention anything about cyrillic support but I'm going to get one to try the update :)

I burnt the files to the CD, but when I went to update the player, the firmware is the same as before I did the upgrade...what did I do wrong???

Nothing.

It's the same version that comes with the player from the factory (although it is nice to have it on CD - to faciliate downgrading if a future firmware version proves unsatisfactory).

so there's no upgraded firmware then?

Not that I'm aware of...
