Win 98 on new pc?

Do you think it'll help with encoding times? I'm thinking about partitioning my Harddrive and loading '98 to it. Not sure if it this would work yet. I think can manually load the needed drivers.

The reason for this is I don't have any $$ to upgrade. I have an AMD Athlon64 3200+ Venice core processor and 2 x 512mb DDR ram.

I figure since XP is such a resource hog, an OS like '98 would allow more resources to be used for the application. Thoughts, ideas, criticisms....?

XP doesn't hog that much, and 98 cannot handle 1GB ram, now you will find drivers for your new hardware.

Also, if I remember correctly, Win98 doesn't support NTFS hard drive format...

XP might've hogged a lot when P3-based Celerons and 192M of ram was common, at its release. But at its worst it's a lot less crash-prone, plus C&Q doesn't work on 98. (Now, comparing your current XP to a fresh 98 might show a difference, depending on how much junk and spyware you've accumulated. A fresh XP might make a lot of difference.)

You could search for 64bits optimized app or dll (like xvid from Celtic_duid)

I have a 3000@2450 and 2*512 and really happy with it (I wanted to get a dualcore but haven't done so yet)

For resource yes and no, exemple: avisynth (2.56) eats more and more ram so I have a ram manager to auto-free.
You can build a stripped Xp install or strip XP after install many possibilities.
I come from 98 and have no regrets. Your choice in the end though :D

Don't get me wrong. I love XP. Its stability is incomparable! I was just trying to squeeze out less encoding time. I like the idea of a stripped XP. Do you think it'll help much?

install xp - install only the drivers you really need - the encoding tools you need and the codecs you need (and nothing else) you will be supprised at how littl xp takes to run, encoding ye the ram useage will go up but its a trade off - then discoonect it from the net - stops little nasties getting on there, if its a network pc just disable the gateway ip so then you can still use it on network but stops it going onto net :)
