DVD Encoding and Authoring Career/Scenarist

Hi Guys,

This is my first post on the forum. This is more of a career-related query than a technical question. I'm in India and have been working in the subtitling sector since 4 years. We do subtitling/closed captioning for major movies and television series here.

Our company is planning on starting an authoring (CEA) department here and is currently surveying for prospective candidates who are experienced in Scenarist/other authoring suites. I'm pretty excited about this new endeavor and would like to be one of the team members in the department. I would like you all to contribute your knowledge on how I can go about it. I have basic knowledge of Photoshop, Flash, and 3D Studio Max on the graphics front. Haven't tried my hand at programming yet. Could you please tell me what experience/training one would have to undergo to be suitable for a position in Authoring? I feel since I've been around here this long and really interested in audio/video technology, I might have a better chance if I got trained on some stuff before applying. Your suggestions are most welcome.

most of the authors here are taught on the job (with the exception of 1 guy).

i'd recommend trying your hand at re-authoring some of your own discs, redesigning menus, etc and making it all work. that sort of thing tells them you can design, author and encode.

the authoring forum here is quite a useful place if you get stuck (search first, as it's not as active as some of the other forums here).

just make sure the disc works :) try it on as many players as you can. it might help to make it a DVD-9, too (especially considering how long most bollywood movies are!). this will show you can set a layer break in a good place (use PGCedit...).

Took me quite a while to figure out where my post was and finally it's here! Thanks for the reply. I have a PIII sys running Win98SE which I guess needs an upgrade before I start doing something on my own. What I also want to know is whether programming knowledge is required for this career. I have absolutely no clue about programming and stuff. Is it something that I can learn on the job? I'm surely going to be on the team once it starts but I definitely feel it would help to get all these basics right so I don't get shocked when something's thrown right in my face. Any basic stuff I can learn so I have a headstart once we are up and running?

One last thing, are you from India?

yeah
it can take a bit more power than a pIII to effectivly author DVDs
but I Beleave Bond did it for a while
and Mug is from Austrila I think as well
