need help

I downloaded some *.asf files from internet and I need to make them to be playable on either vcd or dvd player. I do not want to play them on computer. so, my question is
do I need some software to convert them to some other type of files 1st? What type of file should I convert them to? should I burn to DVD or typical cd will be fine? can the vcd/dvd player play them w/t problem (eg. sychonize)?

I tried to google but it is too hard. I hoep I can get some answers here. Thanks for all the inputs.
