I ripped Casablanca (5.1Gb movie) using DVD Fab Decrypter. I cleaned it up using DVD RemakePro (FBI, studio crap ,etc.). I burned it using Nero (latest) onto 8.5G dual layer. The burn went fine.
If I play it on a Sony player, (or also a Philips portable DVD player), the disk is recognized but I am unable to select anything on the opening menu. There appears to be no cursor and pressing enter or anything does nothing. It is as if the movie freezes at the opening menu. On a PC the same disk looks fine and works fine.
I have put other movies on 8.5 Gb disks (same spindle supply) and they have worked fine too on the Sony, Philips and PC.
Baffled, I ran the files I burned through DVD Shrink to get it down to fit on a 4.7g disk. I burned this shrunk movie onto a DVD-R 4.7g disk and it worked fine on the Sony, Philips and PC!
No editing - just shrinking the movie.
What gives? Are dual layer movies so delicate?
I saw this exact same behavior on another large disk - Honeymooners Disk 1 episodes 1-8. No select cursor on the episode menu, but the disk seems to load fine - you just can't do anything beyond that. If I shrink it and put it on 4.7G disks, it is fine all of a sudden.
And as I've mentioned, other movies burned onto disks from the same 8.5g spindle supply work fine. Weird!!!!
Any ideas what is going on here even if I can't do anything about it?
