Hi everyone.
First, my thanks to this wonderful forum for precious help with my double layer burning problems. I was beginning to get desperate. Through your helpful posts i finally learned that when using DL media i should use DVD Decrypter+ImgBurn. It works like a charm. I can finally make my backups on DL media!!
My questions are:
1) Is there quality loss when i use DVD Shrink with NO COMPRESSION to burn to single layer discs (when the data fits on a single layer disc)? Or do I get better quality by using DVD Decrypter for ripping and then ImgBurn for burning?
2) Sometimes i don't want to backup DVD extras, and the main movie fits on a single layer disc. DVD Shrink is great for these cases, allowing me to choose just the main movie and include or exclude different audio tracks / subtitles. Can you tell me how i can select just the main movie and the audio tracks / subtitles i want without using DVD Shrink? Is it complicated?
Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to the forum,
No quality loss with DvdShrink and no compression, DvdD+ImgBurn (or DvdShrink + Imgburn) is OK, except DvdD doesn't handle new protections well; see 2)

New great freeware is Ripit4me. Will use DvdD + FixVts + DvdShrink(optional) and has 4 modes: ISO, FullDvd, Menus and DVD, Movie only(still retain Dvd structure); takes care of newest protections, fast, try it :)
One more thing, not related to you or your questions: take the time to re-read the rules as, by this time, a lot of newcomers have problems with rule6 or 4 or others, you can find some threads closed or strikes being issued for ... not being cautious :scared:
Cheers.

Welcome to doom9 Juanito.
To select the audio and subs track, you would need to strip the VTS of the unwanted ones. IfoEdit (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/) or VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) is probably the tool of choice here. Guide on the VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) site.

Thanks BigDid and blutach both for your help.
I've tried RipIt4Me, and it looks like a great program. I've never had problems with DVD Decrypter not being able to handle dvd protection, but if RipIt4Me handles everything... that's great. Very good integration with DVD Decrypter, also.
Even with no compression used on DVD Shrink, I've had a dvd backup or 2 with very shady compression results, so that's why i've been trying to find alternatives to DVD Shrink.
But last weekend i came across the situation i feared: a DVD that would only fit on single layer if certain audio/subtitles were removed. After ripping Movie+menus with RipIt4Me to hd, and following blutach's suggestion, i TRIED to use IfoEdit to strip the unwanted audio/subs, so the movie would fit on single layer, but i couldn't. I found out i just don't know enough about dvd structures to successfully use a tool like that. So for now i'm stuck with DVD Shrink when i have to eliminate certain audio tracks/subs.
I read the guides on IfoEdit and was able to produce a set of files presumably stripped of the unwanted audio/subs. Contrary to my expectations, these files (format VTS_03_x.xxx) were similar in size to their counterparts in my initial ripping directory (shouldn't they be smaller?). Besides these files, IfoEdit produced 3 files with extensions .IFO, .BUP and .VOB that exist in my initial ripping directory. Am i supposed to grab the IfoEdit's output files and put them in my original ripping directory, replacing the old ones with the same names? I'm a little lost, here.
Thanks for reading.

Yes, they should be smaller. In IfoEdit (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/), you need to tick the streams to keep. And yes you need to copy the files from your output directory back over to your sources directory (all of them!).
But you're right. VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) is a lot more user friendly in its GUI. Or use DVD Shrink to strip streams. It does an excellent job.

If you're trying to keep menus and extras as well as the main movie, you're probably creating more work for yourself unnecessarily. You might consider a "movie only" backup on one disk, no menus, languages or subtitles that you don't need or understand, and use a second disk to back up the rest.
