One of my co-workers gave me a disk with some video clips of past superbowls recently and they are all mkv files. I tried installing the matroska pack and I was prompted that most every codec I already use wil cause problems with matroska. I can't disable all of those codecs in order to play one or two files.
I decided to try to convert them to .avi, but no matter what I did they ended up with no sound. Every time I tried to demux the audio so I could add it later to these videos I came up with either an unknown file type or a .wav that played blank.
What can I do with these files? Is there a way to play them in WMP 10 that wont conflict with my other codecs, or is there a way I can easily convert them?

I think I may have found something that could be useful, but I'm not sure exactly how. I usually use Puma Video Converter to change my files to different formats. When I open any of the .mkv files in question in Puma, the info pane shows the audio codec as AAC.
I have never seen this before. Is it possible that I just don't have the codec/decoder needed and that's why I can't demux the audio into it's own file, and if so, where can I get the codec needed? I searched the internet, but couldn't find what I needed, just source code for what says it's an AAC decoder.

You have some mkv files and want them playback on your pc? Install ffdshow and haali splitter and open the mkv files in mpc. That should be (in most cases) enough...

Wierd. I just opened one of the files in MPC and it played fine without installing anything new. Then I opened it in WMP 10 and it plays with sound now, but there are 2 audio tracks that overlap eachother. I wonder what changed, since I didn't install anything new or change any settings.
Now I guess I would like any advice as to how to make them play in WMP with only one audio stream. I know they play fine in MPC, but I have been able to play everything else in WMP so far and I hate having to use multiple players, especially when I want to create a varied playlist.
