Nero Recode Does Not Complete

When encoding a DVD movie to Nero Digital AVC, Nero Recode stops somewhere during the 2nd pass of encoding and you often see a screen like this:

In the log file, I will always see a message like the following:

This does not seem to be related to any one movie or any one computer as I have seen this happen on different computers and different movies.

Strangely, it also seems to occur when I open a VNC viewer to the computer that is doing the encoding although this does not always happen.

Has anyone seen this?

I am now conviced more than ever that it is some kind of interaction between the VNC Server and Nero Recode. The error seems to always occur at the exact point when I start up a VNC session on the computer where the encoding is taking place. I do not believe that opening up other programs has any effect.

This is too bad since VNC is a great way to monitor the progress of encoding on a remote computer.

If it's true, be sure you've found other people having the same problem (looking on other forums, or even in VNC or Nero's FAQs).

If not, it's in the community's interest that you report the problem to both parties.

Just to let you know that someone actually cared about the problem :p

Are they 9x or 2k? If they're XP you can always use a remote session, although it'd have to be initiated within that session as well. Or *cough (http://sig9.com/articles/concurrent-remote-desktop)*

I had a similair issue. Make sure that your VNC session is not changing the resolution of the PC running Recode.
For some reason the res change is what is probably doing it.

Test this out on your system, start a recode encode and change the resolution and see if it eitheer starts going down in FPS or just crashes. If so, make sure to change the settings on VNC to keep the resolution the same.
I use GoToMyPc so I do not know for sure if there is any such setting but I imagine that there must be.

This was a major hurdle for me as well, but it happened with both RADMIN (Remote Administrator), VNC and remote desktop.

Basically, don't mess with it once you start encoding. Any changes to any display will cause recode to crash, even if you aren't adjusting resolution.

So, leave VNC up or whatever and don't close it until the encode completes, otherwise you run the risk of crashing recode.

Thanks for all your help. It is nice to know that other people have had the same issue.

I will play with changing resolution settings and see if I get the same behavior. However, I just installed the latest version of Nero 7.5 and so who knows...maybe they fixed it. :)

I can tell you its still busted in 7.5.1.1, but AVC only seems to be affected. You can do as you wish if you are encoding in Nero ASP. But it doesn't take much to crash AVC.

For example:


Start a 1-pass encode
Look at the file size grow
hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, and just hit escape after that
look at the file size - it will have reset itself to zero
again, this doesn't affect ASP encodes
