I recently recorded an old B&W movie from TV. The print was very dark but otherwise ok. Is there an affordable means of adjusting the brightness and contrast in the process of burning it from the HDD to a DVD+R?

the complexity of this procedure will depend upon what format you recorded it in.
avisynth or virtual dub are both free and will easily correct this problem.

Thanks for the suggestions! Both appear to work only on avi files. How do I convert my vob files to avi in order to to correct the luminance problem, and then convert back to vob?

DGMPGDec to serve the video through Avisynth and demux the audio. Use the Avisynth script to adjust the brightness/contrast and reinsert the audio. Open the Avisynth script in your MPEG2 encoder and make a compliant MPG stream. Author the DVD.
