Keeping Resolutions and Aspect Ratios

If I'm Encoding a 4:3 Aspect Ratio video and I want to keep the Original Resolution of 740x480, how can I do this and maintain the Proper Aspect Ratio? I'm using a MAC and Handbrake. Handbrake automatically sets 4:3 material to 640x480, If I uncheck to maintain aspect ratio and set it to 740x480 the image is distorted. Do I need to Crop? I can set the aspect ratio in VLC to 4:3 but I don't want to do this everytime.

4:3 is usualy 640x480 on PC. 720x480 is 4:3 but for TV.

Your 720x480 4:3 source will have been generated using "non square" (anamorphic) pixels....

Re-sizing to 640x480 pixels will provide you with a "square pixel" 4:3 resolution.

I just encoded a file with MeGUI and selected clever anamorphic decoding and clicked on encode non-mode 16 to maintain the 720x576 PAL ratio. I guess my picture looks the same way as scarpads does. but does that actually mean when looking this at TV it will look like the normal DVD AR (even when only viewed by cloned desktop and vlc player enlarged on that TV screen) ?
