Hey Everyone,

First of all I would just like to say thanks for all the answers I've got here over the last few years. I hardly ever have to start a new thread cuz I usually am able to find the answer to any question I've had.

I am having a bit of a problem now and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I bet I'm missing it but I'm kinda at my wits end so I thought I'd throw it out there.

About a year ago there was this great sale on blank dvd-r's and I ended up stocking up at a great price. I haven't needed to by new ones since. Problem is that I'm down to my last few and when I went down to the store it seems that my old dvd-r 8X have been replaced with dvd-r 16X! I bought a couple and tried running them through the old burner and I got write speed errors!

My first thought was that I needed some sort of firmware update or something but when I looked up my burner (hp dvd writer dvd420i)it seems there hasn't been any updates, though there have been for the dvd420n but not since late 2004.

My question is do I need to buy a whole new burner because of this or is there some sort of fix that I can do like maybe changing a setting or something. Any help would be great.

Thanks a lot,
JV

Is your burner so old that it can't write at 4X or faster? If so, then yes, it's time for a new drive.

Fry's Electronics often puts a Memorex drive on sale for $40. A friend of mine has one and he frequently burns at 16X (against my recommendations) and he says the burned disks play just fine on nearly every player he's tried. He alternates between Memorex media and "GQ," also available at Fry's and the latter frequently on sale.
