I'm converting a standard 1 gig VOB to XVID avi. There's no progress meter so I'm wondering how long this is going to take (three hours and counting) and how big the file will be (100 mb bigger than original and counting).

No audio, no subtitles, Target quality 100%, auto width.

Four hours now, and 320 mb bigger than original.

Is there a way to convert VOB/mpeg2 to avi without compression and without bloating the file?

Hi,

The culprit is in bold (100%) for 1 pass target quality; aim for 65 to 75 % knowing it has been reported size may double above 67%.

Or make a 2 pass encode with something more reasonable like 1cd/700Mb

I figured that has something to do with it, but how much quality loss am I going to see if I set at 65%?

That's impossible to determine because it depends on factors such as the chosen resolution and the content of the video. A 1GB .VOB file ripped from a DVD should typically contain about 23 minutes of video, which should easily compress to around 200-400MB depending on the chosen resolution if you use two pass. In the past, most people would usually use 175MB for a file of that length to fit four on one CD-ROM.
