I want to try the Nero Digital AAC Encoder to transcode a ac3 5.1 448 kb/s file to aac 5.1.
What bitrate should I go for? I want to keep the soround sound in a "good" quality.
I tried the quality setting q=0.5 and the transcoded file ended up bigger then the file I started with.:(

What quality can I expect from an 5.1 aac file with 200-250 kbit/s?

I would appreciate any comments.

I would not call my PC Speakers high fidility, so testing the audio quality is a bit limited.

You should be fine with around 128kbs but don't go under 96.

You should expect excellent quality.

I aslo recommend to try Coding Technologies AAC, beacuse shows more fidelity in 5.1 encodings, especialy on low-mid rates like is 96-192kpbs

I did a quick test with the Nero AAC Encoder.

I encoded a wav file from CD with q=0.6 , q=0.2 and q=0.15.
To make it short: it is very hard to tell the difference.

This leads me to 3 conclusions so far:

1. My PC Speakers are even worse than I thought.
2. Nero AAC is quite good in low bitrate
3. I should go and see my ENT doctor. ;)

For stereo recordings you can go to 48kbps, and you get very good quality, aslo nero is very good at low bitrates
