Is it just me or is the forum slower than usual?

Assuming such an attack is from an individual address:

1) A forum administrator must first notice a problem, then 2) find the root cause, then 3) gain the time and attention of someone who can do something about it, if the administrator himself cannot.

The attacker can then just move addresses and repeat.

If an attack is distributed, this process, however flawed, is even less useful.

but, if all the attacks are from the same IP, it's easily blocked. It's not easy for everyone to change IPs...

Well, it's a wanadoo.fr user. Right now he has IP 82.126.53.90
and he's doing it again. the IP is banned again, but it's just a matter of getting a new IP for him.. with DSL IP address changed can sometimes even be forced and often there's a new IP after 24 hours.
We could stop it reliably by turning off searches for guests, but that means a lot of people have to sign up just to search, which isn't ideal either.

would it be possible to send a notification of abuse to this provider? Wanadoo's abuse desk does not have a terrific reputation for managing problems. Wanadoo France currently is protecting 5 spammer's servers listed in Spamhaus' SBL -- two of them have been open and pumping spam since March.

In addition, the address Doom9 mentions is an open proxy that Wanadoo has been unable or unwilling to remove from the internet -- see http://www.completewhois.com/cgi-bin/rbl_lookup.cgi?query=82.126.53.90&display=webtable ; this particular denial-of-service attack could have been lauched from anywhere on earth.

thanks to a forum update we were able to keep searches open for everyone but still stop attacks based on overloading the server by sending searches nonstop.
